Not about vaginas, but the last post about boobs got me thinking...

Is there like a community on LJ where you can go post pictures of your body or body parts that you don't like about yourself, and get all kinds of (genuine, not perverted) validation comments? LOL, I would love to post my boobs here (I hate them) and see who *really* likes them and who thinks they're just as wierd/ugly as I do, but this is not the place for that. Anyone know anything? and please don't suggest nakedparts...

I think I have seen postings like that before, I believe they were titled "everyday ____ (breasts, legs, butts ect.). I would be interested in knowing the site address though, so I hope someone posts some more info up :)

The Everyday [BodyPart] project is not for validating any individual's negative perspectives of theirself. It's about "normalizing" everyone and all of the human variation present - esp. in regards to the parts of our personhood which are so carefully concealed and guarded - in a body-positive, non-judgmental, safe space. In particular, women have very few opportunities to view other female genitals and often wonder "Am I normal?" From that question was the Everyday Bodies Project undertaken.

[livejournal.com profile] nakedgirlparts is great, and all women, so it feels like a much safer place than some of the communities where you know some guy is just looking for free nekkie photos.

Would hearing that other people (random strangers, no less) like your body really mean you would start to like your body?

I'm sorry if this comes off sounding like I'm a jerk - I don't mean to be. It seems like a curious tactic, because if random people on the street told me I was fat/ugly, I would dismiss their comments because who the fuck are they to impose their opinion on me anyway? I don't feel it's that different if random people tell me I'm thin/goodlooking. Good for them, but it doesn't really impact on my own opinion of myself because they don't even know me.
I feel like your opinion of yourself should be based on what you know about yourself, and be more or less impervious to the opinions of strangers. What do you think?

Not the OP, so I can't speak for her, but I personally like seeing that other people's bodies are as real (ie individual and not porn-perfect) as mine, so it's very validating to hear from other people that my parts are normal and, dare I say, beautiful. That said, I do agree with you that self-validation needs to come from within. But we all need support sometimes in hanging on to our own opinions.
