the cramping is probably from shoving it too hard against your cervix. i have been wearing tampons for years (i started out with the commercial types, and now i use organic cotton with no applicators), and i still stick them in too forcefully/too far more often than not! it gives me an extra crampy feeling, but it fades in maybe 10 minutes or so, for me.
