I checked the archives, but I couldn't find anything.

When first started menstruating, I noticed that that I would get a sharp pain in my lower right abdomen. I asked my mom, and clever lady that she is, she told me it was ovulation pain, explained when in my cycle I should expect it, and told me it was nothing to worry about. That was a long time ago, and I never have worried. Until now.

I don't think I get the pain every month, and it's hardly noticeable most months when I do feel it. But other times it's been horrendously painful. (Best description I have is I almost feel like something delicate is being pulled. Sometimes when I move it "pulls" even more and so I sort of have to double over until the pain subsides.)

Now, on to my main concern. I've been on the pill (OTC) for the last four years, and have still experienced "ovulation pain" from time to time like I used to before I was on the pill. It never clicked that since I wasn't supposed to be ovulating, I probably shouldn't be getting any ovulation pain anymore. Looking back, perhaps there were times when I had messed up my pills, but I don't think that explains all of times I've felt pain, if any.

So there's that recent revelation and now this: As of today I'm only 6 days into my new cycle and I've been feeling a dull "ovulation pain" for two days already, on and off. I don't think I've ever had it last this long. (10 minutes maybe, but never two days!)

In short: I'm on the pill, and I'm no where near the time I normally would be ovulating at, even if I was supposed to be ovulating, which I'm not. Plus, I absolutely have not screwed up my pill at all lately. Anyone have any idea of what might be happening?

Thanks!

first thing, if you are menstruating, and you have a sharp pain in your lower abdomen, are you SURE it's not a cramp? cramps can change from month to month.

when you've gotten this pain in the past, has it been around your period?

i have endometriosis, so i get severe cramping pains during my period, before my period, after my period.

if the pain is pretty bad though, it doesn't hurt to call your doctor and explain your story. you are correct that you probably shouldn't be ovulating, so it's my guess it's something other than ovulation pain. but try not to worry, just call the doctor to ease your mind.

In my case it was ovarian cysts.
I had alot of pressure near my lower abdomen and I could actually feel the hardness of the ovary during my cycle.
You should probably get it checked out by the doctor.

Well, here's the thing. Ovulation pain (which has a neat name, mittelschmerz), if that is what it is, should occur on the day in your cycle when you ovulate. Which in a perfect word, would be day 14 or so.

If you are having a sharp pain during your period, it is very unlikely that it is mittelshmerz, because you normally ovulate before your period, not while you are on it. So, your mom had a good guess, but is probably wrong. It may just be normal for you to feel this sensation during your period.

I would also suggest talking to your doctor, just to rule out other possibilies.

Good luck!

Go, Mom!

Sorry, I couldn't be of more help - let us know what your doctor says!
