[identity profile] teri-lynn.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vaginapagina
I didn't see this posted anywhere, and I found it a little outrageous.

Yes, I realize that this is a Catholic school, but if the mother couldn't walk the stage, then the father shouldn't have been allowed to either.

...of course the father was allowed. It's not his fault she got pregnant. It's never the man's fault.

agreed... um it kinda takes two . . . unless I suppose they think the child is jesus part deux or something.

yeah i hate that double standard about guys and girls

guys should bang as many people as possible
but girls cannot sleep with anyone

Hehe, jesus part deux... in which case I think they would want her to walk. ;-)

i think the fact that the baby's dad was allowed to walk is one of the most nauseating things about that situation.

I applaude that girl for her guts and courage.

But I spit on the school for their unjust treatment. That is so lame and disgusting.

Typical. Good for her for going ahead and doing it anyway.

I can't believe that. All the teachers and the principals and vice principals were so proud of me when I graduated, because I had my daughter halfway through my senior year and still finished at the top of my class. I can't even begin to imagine how that girl felt being told she couldn't participate in something she worked so hard for.

That is ridiculous! Its hard to believe that this type of sexism still exists. If the mother couldn't walk then the father should not have been able to either. It's nice to know that at least her family and friends were supportive. I admire her for being strong and courageous enough to go through with it. Especially in that type of situation.

what a load of bull. IT takes two to tango, and the school's discrimination at the young mother is just shocking. If they are going to ban her, why not ban the father of child as well?

... that kinda reminded me why i stopped atteding sunday masses since I was 17.

I am applauding for the young woman's courage and support from her family.

I assume the logic for letting the father walk is that he was not pregnant. I assume (since the school knew about it) that she was showwing--an obvious sign of premarital(i assume) sex, whereas the man has no visible sign of such activity.

doesnt make it right.

OK, to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they were afraid that she might fall down while walking at hurt herself (they mentioned something about "safety concerns"). But that doesn't give them an excuse to keep her name out of the program.

From: [identity profile] hells-librarian.livejournal.com
My first try came out meaner than I meant it to (sorry), but they weren't concerned about her falling down . . .

(I didn't take it personally)
Oh, I know that's not what they were concerned about. But they claimed it was for "safety" reasons. So I'm interested in what those safety reasons would be if they were pressed. And lots of people get irrational about the safety of pregnant women. I don't think they were justified, and I think it's hypocritical, but I can see some paranoid principal having nightmares of her tripping on the stairs.

Something similar happened at my high school graduation... but I went to an all-girls Catholic high school. She eventually did walk, but it took a lot of uprising from everyone in the school for her to do so. So ridiculous...

That is ridiculous, and that is one of the main reasons I despise religious schools, and 90% of religious people. What, if she walked the stage, people would have been offended? That's stupid. Even if it was in a church. It's stupid because the only reason she was banned was because she was carrying physical proof that she had premarital sex. How much do you wanna bet that a LOT of those other girls have done the same? And just didn't get pregnant?

Yeah, and if she couldn't walk, he shouldn't have been allowed to either. He had the sex, he shouldn't get special privileges just because he just so happens to NOT have the uterus.

Religion is always going to hold us back fifty years socially/morally. Fucking ri-goddamn-diculous.

I think that is a very unfair characterization. As a religious person, I think claiming that my beliefs are somehow holding our country back, even though you don't know anything about my beliefs, even though you have never met me, is a horrible generalization. People are not going to listen to other points of view when they see themselves being attacked.

That's actually what I mean. It's the people that are part (and heads of) organizations like this that are trying to keep everyone else in their mindset of what it was like in the 50's. I understand it may have been "school policy" but it's this girl's ONLY graduation, and they let the father walk for chrissakes. Things like this are what I hate about people like that.

Religion isn't bad in itself, like I said, I think everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, it's just ridiculous when religious people push their religion on others or criticize them for lack thereof.

Date: 2005-05-19 06:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 0pink-suicide0.livejournal.com
No, actually that characterization was aimed at organizations and people that are still living in the pre-modernized world of the 1950's and think premarital pregnancy is satan and people shouldn't dress or talk a certain way and therefore look down on everyone who doesn't believe the same as them.

I for one think everyone is entitled to their beliefs, I just cannot stand people who push their beliefs on others. If you're not like that, the comment was absolutely not aimed at you, and I apologize if you were offended.

I'll accept your clarification, but I really don't think that's what you were saying...speaking of puching your beliefs on others.

Well after reading it I realize I summed it up a bit too much, I really didn't mean religion in general. I didn't mean to offend anyone. It's just the people that do stuff like this (a.k.a. my GRANDMOTHER) that irk me.

I just read the article on cnn.com and was thinking the same thing: how ludicrous. He gets to knock her up, but absolved of all sin because she's the physical embodiment now of the sin, and therefore she's now the only guilty party. Fuck that nonsense. It takes TWO to tango.

In 1990 they forced my pregnant sister out of school. She found out prom night; all dressed up and they wouldn't allow her to come even as someone else's date. They then told her never to come back. My senior senior (1992) a 15 year old got pregnant and the day she turned 16, they forced her out. No boys ever got into trouble. Assholes.

Someone remind me again why I haven't left this friggin state?

The bottom line, Montgomery is an ass-backwards Bible-Thumping town... always has been... and the fact that it's a Catholic school just gives it that much more power in the minds of the community... as far as they're concerned, there's a public school just down the road a bit...

Meh, the Pagans in Montgomery had a grand day with this one...
