Okay, I was wearing my cotton jammie pants, and I know that I was going to bleed through my tampon, but I thought I had a little while longer, while my step-dad was in the bathroom. WRONG. Now there is blood all over my pants...

So, can I save them? Or will they be stained? It's a LOT of blood. I'd take a picture, but that would probably gross some people out. I'm not an ace with laundry (all i knew how to do was my work clothes), and I'm not sure what to do to clean them. I really love these pants, haha. So... period blood + cotton = what?

[ EDIT ]

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I got the stain out by spraying it with cold water from one of those spray nozzles in the sink. From what I can tell, it's pretty much gone, so I am happy. God bless you girls! <3

Put them in water to soak immediately. Then stain stick them and wash them asap. You might have to wash a few times, but it should come out if you soak.

Cold! Hot water will just set the stain.

As cold as possible. Then pretreat before you wash.

i'm not exactly sure if it will help, but i guess it's worth a try...

a few years ago when i took a dive off my bike and sliced my knee open i was faced with the same situation, these were leg saving pants that i was wearing and no way in hell was i going to toss them away because of a little blood. if it's still fresh, and i'm assuming that it is, lol, try hydrogen peroxide. i never found it to damage the fabric of anything, since i've tried it on my undies when accidents happen. try it. it should work.

*thinks*

My grandma and mom use a mix that is:

1/3 Dish Soap
1/3 Ammonia
1/3 Water

It works WONDERS. On blood and lots of other stuff, too. I've been using it for years...

try first with cold water & soap!! (i just watch period-stained stuff in the sink most of the time). i can usually get a stain out pretty well with just those two. just scrub the pants into themselves, if that makes sense..lol. (do this ASAP!! it's easiest to get out the earlier you do it). if that doesn't get the stain out entirely, throw it in the wash after spraying some "shout" or one of those stain removers on it.
as for settings in the laundry.. i forget if cold or hot makes stuff shrink.. i suck. i think hot water makes things shrink.. can someone else confirm this? haha.
good luck!

What color is the material of your pants? I leaked through once onto my khaki-colored pants, and it came right out, but it wasn't a lot. Use cold water to wash/rinse them. Warm/hot will make it set faster. You might want to try Shouting it and leaving it sit for a while (it will say on the bottle how long, but a few hours should work - or you could just leave it overnight). WHATEVER YOU DO - make sure the stain is COMPLETELY gone before you dry it in a dryer. The dry heat will set the stain.

p.s. When I was in the 6th grade I was in a bike accident and busted my face, and there was blood all over my shirt - it came right out just in one cold water wash (cold wash & rinse).

Pour hydrogen peroxide on it and blot it with an old rag/towel then wash in cold water. Do not put heat on it (dryer, blowdryer, ect) it will only set the stain. Let the pants air dry and repeat process.

I've heard that hydrogen peroxide poured directly onto the stain will bubble the blood out (That sounds really gross!) lol
If that doesn't work, pre-treating the stain (I think Tide works best for this) may get the rest out. Just pour the liquid detergent on the stain and use an old toothbrush and some elbow grease.
Also, do NOT put the jammies in the dryer until the stain is out to your satisfaction. The heat will set the stain.

rinse them out with cold water in the sink -- try to do that until the water runs clear, and then pop them in the machine and wash with cold water immediately. the quicker you do this, the better. if it doesn't come out after that, try some of the other suggestions, but anytime i've leaked onto cotton pants, this has done the trick. one time, my instead cup fell out and leaked all over my favorite jeans (we're talking several hours worth of blood plopping out all at once), and i did this, it was all gone.

and as others have said -- by all means, keep the pants away from a dryer, hot water, or anything like that until the stain's out. and keep the stain moist if you can.

Hydrogen peroxide. Soak them in it (the part that's stained) rub it around and it should be completely perfect!
I got a nosebleed out of my favorite white shirt like this.

If the stain is stubborn and starting to dry, you can make a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Spread it on the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then spray with cold water.
