WAXING

oh god people, i post here sometimes but this time i'm so embarassed that i had to make another name. dumb, i know. anyways. i'm a 19 year old female and i have noticeable dark hair on my upper lip. i've been hella self conscious about it since the lady who waxed my eyebrows was all "do you want me to do your mustasche too?" and i was like um *embarassed avoidance of question* and it sucked. anyway, she put the idea of waxing it into my head but i was too embarassed to ask her any questions. everyone here is so helpful that i figured hey why not, even though it's not really vagina related. mods please feel free to delete.

1. what does the hair look like when it grows back? is it thicker or darker? will i have STUBBLE? i definitely do not want like, a five o'clock shadow.
2. how long does it take to grow back? do you have to wait until the hair is all long to get it waxed again?
3. is it really worth it? can girls with mustasches still be cute? haha

my mom tells me that i shouldn't because she is convinced that it will be thicker after it grows in, and that you can't see it anyway, but she is my mom and she is supposed to say that.

thanks for your responses, ladies

Just get one of those bleaching kits and bleach it, if you're concerned about getting it waxed. I think Sally Hansen makes one.

Hmmm...well, if you're that self-conscious about it, then you should proceed with the waxing. You just need to do it consistently if you're worried about hair regrowth being thicker.

Honestly, I don't know if the hair will grow back thicker or not. I have very fine, very light hair on my lip that isn't at all noticeable.

removing hair in any fashion doesn't make it grow in thicker. or darker. it LOOKS thicker and darker if you shave, or sometimes nair, because you've chopped the top off and its now growing in with a blunt as opposed to a fine, tapered tip. with shaving, etc, if you LET it grow out naturally at that point, eventually it would be back to normal as the hair is replaced.

with waxing (or tweezing properly) you remove the hair completely. when it grows in, its a new hair, with a new, tapered end. not thicker or darker.

so go ahead and wax.

nope, it's not thicker or darker when it grows back in. i've never noticed stubble really. logically, the hair should be shorter at some point, but i suppose since (as someone explained above) the new hair's ends are tapered, the short hairs aren't stubbly or particularly noticable.

When I feel like being 'on top of things' I wax every week or two, but I do it myself so it's not a big deal in terms of cost or time commitment. People who have it done for them probably do it less frequently.

also, wax regularly with short intervals. Longer intervals can result in a swollen follicle. They only need to be short before being waxed, check with your waxer to see what they say.

If you don't awnt to get it done professionally, i use nads facial wand and its great.

yeah lisamaria is right. i have a bit of a problem with facial hair as well and i wax it regularally and it gradually gets finer and finer. and sometimes sparcer as well. don't shave it or use nair or anything that doesn't take it out by the roots though as that will encourage it and make it worse. another option is getting electrolisis though i tould recomend that you find someone that does not use the flash method but rather galvanic or other similar methods where you are holding a rod that is conected to the machine by wires. it works by far the best and will get rid of it with a few treatments though it does vary from person to person.

I use cream hair removal on mine, I think it's Sally Hansen brand. Smells like ass but it works. :D

I don't bleach or try to make invisible my "upper lip hair". Accept your body for what it is.

I've waxed my upper lip, and the hair grew back in finer... it didn't look darker or anything. I've had my eyebrows done for so long now that eventually some hairs get pulled out permanently - those are the little bloody spots you see (according to my waxer). With time, this could happen on your upper lip. It hurts like crazy, but it does feel sooo smooth when it's done (and I'm sure the pain fades once you get used to it, I know it did for me on the eyebrows).

I'm not sure if mine got any thicker or darker due to the spate of waxings I had done in my teen years.

All I know is waxing was expensive, slightly painful and resulted in me looking like a clown for a few days and then having painful pimply things on my lip until the hair grew back. So I stopped getting it done. Much more comfortable to just leave it alone.

I'm a licensed esthetician and waxing is part of my job. The hair will NEVER grow back more than it already was. More often than not, it grows back finer, softer, and lighter. And eventually, it does slow down hair growth. Usually places offer a deal if you get brow & upper lip together. I usually reccomend starting at every 2-3 weeks (depending on how fast your hair grows back) and some places will sell you some product that can slow down hair regrowth.

I shave my upperlip. I don't get a five oclock shadow. I only need to shave like once every two weeks.

I have a little upper-lip hair too, and after trying various methods I have finally rested on waxing. It doesn't make the hair grow back any thicker or darker, and I've found it the easiest and the longest lasting method.
I tried the facial hair removing cream but I didn't like it one bit. I found that it made my lip feel almost sore for quite some time, and very very dry.
I think perhaps I was allergic or intolerant to it.

I remember shaving it once, and it was the biggest mistake of my life. It gave me a shaving rash, and I had to slap on loads of concealer to hide it.

Don't be embarrassed about it. There's probably more women with a moustache problem than women without. It's just one of those places that is a little more obvious if you have dark hair.

I read all over the comments not to use Nair, but I have been using Nair for years and it works pretty well. You just have to be really careful not to leave it on for too long, because that will burn your lip. I take the hair off everytime I look at myself in the mirror and notice the mustache, which is about every two or three weeks.

I definitely do not have the guts to get it waxed, Nair is painless (for me at least). :)

although if it makes you uncomfortable you should totally do something about it, i'd be furious at the lady who waxes your eyebrows! she was totally playing off of your insecurities to make more money!

like I said, I do waxing as part of my job, and honestly, 9 times out of 10 (if I'm with it that day), I ask people if they want their upper lip done when I'm doing their eyebrows. I do it because the majority of women who come to me get their brow & lip done at the same time, so this way, I'll know right away what they're getting done. I usually try to ask right as we're walking into the room, before I've even gotten a good look at them, that way they won't think I'm focusing on their mustache and feel insecure. But the reason we point it out is not to make people feel bad so we can make money, but it's because a LOT of women have hair there, it's normal, but a LOT of women don't know what to do about it, or what their options are. A lot of women are also too embarassed to ask. Sometimes I'll ask people and they'll be like "Oh, I've always wnated to know about that... how bad does it hurt? does it grow back thicker? etc etc". It's just an opportunity to educate people about their options, not to make them insecure. :)

1. the hair will not grow back thicker or darker, nothing but dying your hair will change the color. It will grow back just like you see it now, with tapered ends.

2. I don't know, I don't wax. A few weeks I would imagine until it grew complately back.

3. thats a matter of personal opinion. I'd say that modern western culture doesn't usually identify female facial hair as attractive but you need to do what you want for yourself.

i don't have any advice because i don't know anything about waxing, but *yes*, girls with upper lip hair can still be cute. in all honesty, it's hardly even noticeable, and - come on! it's just a little bit of hair! i understand if it makes you uncomfortable and you want it removed, but i promise you're still lovely. :)

I have upper lip hair. I tried to pluck it once. Well I only got about one hair out... and I knew I wasnt going to do that anymore on the upper lip. lol I tried Nair... but I dont prefer it on the upper lip. I just shave my upper lip about every other week, and it seems to work out pretty good.

I just used Sally Hanson Facial Hair Removal stuff on my upper lip for the first time about a week ago. I think I left it on too long or scrubbed too hard or something, it hurt a lot that evening and the next day, and the day after that it was pimply. It seems like waxing might be better because it grows back with a tapered end, but it's also more work and more expensive. I might try the Sally Hanson stuff one more time and then give waxing a go if I'm still not satisfied. As to whether it's worth it or not...the jury's still out on that one. As to cuteness, what is cute is girls who are comfortable with themselves. So whatever you choose to do, make sure it's whatever you're most comfortable with. Or make like me and give it a try...if you don't like it, you can always stop doing anything about it. I think a lot of women do something about their upper lip hair, but I don't really know how many exactly. I felt a bit better about it when my mom started doing it. Yeah it's really wonderful to accept your body as is, I respect the people who can do that, but I want it to be gone, and we have the technology. I don't know.

high-five!
we are similar
i have dark-ish skin and i have tried many upper-lip removal methods
when i was younger i once shaved it about 2 times DONT SHAVE IT!
then i got a hair removal cream i hated it because it stank really badly and when it was growing back it felt like i had shaved and it kind of hurt.
then i used to bleach it for about a year and a half ( iused sally hansen facial bleach) i liked it because it only took about 10 minutes to do but i felt i could still notice it and since i have stopped bleaching it i have notice the sides ( near my mouth) had whitened due to the bleach ( i have olive skin) but its faded now.
And about a month or so ago i started waxing my upper lip. It doesnt hurt, the first time i did it, it was painfull but thats it. Sometimes i think my eyebrows hurt more that my upper lip. The hair grows back soft. And i get my upper lip does every week and a half to two weeks. so far i have found that waxing id the best option it pretty much pain-free, its cheap ( my mum does mine, my aunty is a beautician so she taught my mum how to do it)and after so many years the hair will get thinner so you wont have to get it does as often and then in like 6 years you will only need to pluck out a hair or two.
Just out of curiousity how old are you?
if you want to ask me anymore just comment in my journal or something.

I have dark upper lip hair and skin dark enough to make anything bleached stand out a mile. That said, I don't do anything with it. This is because when I was 4, a friend's mom had a moustache, a full on black one on pure white skin. She never shaved or bleached. Being kids we asked her about it (nosy little things) and she said "I have dark hair so it grows all over. It's natural and nothing to be ashamed of." So thanks to her, I am not ashamed. Besides, the only person who says anything about it is my husband, when I ask him to shave his prickly moustache, he says "I will if you will". I just stick my tongue out at him and tell him that I was blessed with softer hair. *g*

That "grows back darker" thing is totally a myth.

I have this huge thick Helga Pataki monobrow, and I've been waxing it since I was like 10 or 11. I can't be sure of this, but I think after nearly a decade of being yanked out every couple weeks, a good amount of my eyebrow hairs have actually given up and stopped growing, because I have to wax a whole lot less often now than when I was in junior high.

I have a teeny bit of a moustache, and I wax it maybe 3 or 3 times a year. I can only offer one piece of advice: If you don't get all the hair with one rip, NEVER EVER EVER put on another coat and try again. You'll tear up your skin and probably get some nasty ingrown hairs. Wait a day or two for your skin to calm down, then wax again... or if you can't wait that long, wait an hour or so and pluck.
