My period usually lasts 3 to 4 days. But last week I got my period and I bled very heavy one day and had the most horrible cramps. I took around 15 ibuprofen and I still could barely deal with them. Then the next day my period completely stopped but then it started again that night with horrible cramps again. Then it just completely stopped. I'm sure its nothing to worry about but has this happened to anyone before? or why?

I don't usually get cramps at all, just a yucky tummy, but my period will come heavey for a while, then stop, and come back like that some times too.

try midol or pamprin, those are meant for menstrual pain, Ibuprofen works usually, but I usually still feel a little tense or mildly sore when I have cramps and take it.

That's when you get a prescription from your doctor for a better painkiller. Also, though, one way is to take the pills when you anticipate your period to start, that way they're already in your system when the cramps come, so they never really hit you.

well that sucks, I've never tried either of them my self though. Maybe try taking a hot bath with some nice mint or mavender oil in the water, that might help, or even just a warm shower or towl.

Yeah, midol/pamprin don't work for me either, and I tend to take a lot of ibeprofen. Watch out, though, 'cuz you'll build up an immunity that way. 15 is a lot.. if it happens again, you'll probably want to see a doc about getting something stronger : )

I've never taken Pamprin, but I know Midol is just tylenol and caffeine in one convenient pill. Sometimes it works, but ..meh.

If you're using OTC painkillers, the best one that I've found is Aleve. My fiance told me that if it had more "painkiller" in it, it have to be prescription - only it sounded more official when he said it.

Be sure to take only one a day! (They should last all day)
More than that is dangerous.

That's not true. It's fine to take way more than one a day, just don't do it immediately, and talk to your doctor about it if you have sensitivities. Only start with one at a time at first, but even the package says that you can take up to 3 in a 24 hour period, and I've (quite a few times, Aleve is my painkiller of choice) taken 6 in a 24 hour period.

Oh cool.

When I moved, I put all my (otc) painkillers in the same bottle to conserve space, and because they all look very different, but now I don't have the specific directions for each of them.

I've only needed one because my pain is usually pretty temporary, plus I heard that they were too strong to be taking more than one.

Thanks for the clarification.

It totally depends on your body and how you react to painkillers (and certain painkillers at that). I can take plenty of Aleve and be fine, but a half of a Tylenol PM pretty much destroys me for about 24 hours (while Tylenol with codeine does almost nothing). I think that the key with any painkiller (over the counter or not) is to be cautious at first, and know your body well before you take more than recommended. I have found, though, that Aleve is worse on my stomach than other medications, so I always have to take it either with food or on a relatively full stomach.

well, the reason it's dangerous is that if you have ulcers, naproxen-based medications can irritate them and make them bleed, and if you take a lot of this type of painkiller, it can contribute to very severe irritations of the stomach lining. you might have an especially strong stomach, but aleve can be dangerous for some.

is that if you have ulcers

But that's a big if. If you have ulcers you have to be careful about a lot of drugs. Naproxen is stronger than other otc painkillers, but once a day isn't standard advice.

even in people without ulcers--likely in people with acid reflux, or even something as simple as a sensitive stomach--it can cause stomach bleeding. i can attest to this myself, hah. even before it started actually hurting me, it never really worked well for me as a painkiller when i was taking it, anyway. so it's not much of a loss that i can't take it now.
