Freezing the cervex
Aug. 1st, 2004 03:10 pmI've been in numerous times to the gyno and had abnormal pap smears until finally they said I had mild-dysplasia (early stages of cancer).
So I went in and did what my mother had done a few years back which was freezing the top layer of the cervex to rid the pre-cancerous cells. Has anyone else got this procedure done? It's not common for someone my age...
I felt horrible afterwards, and the gyno said no sex for 3 weeks!!!!, ahhhhhh! I'm still getting 'discharge' from the procedure (which is natural for two weeks), but I was wondering... this is the last few weeks I get to see my guy before I leave for college.... does anyone think it would be 'pushing it' to have sex a bit earlier than 3 weeks?

Date: 2004-08-01 02:20 pm (UTC)It is getting more and more common for younger people to have this procedure - go visit the community "HPV" where many of us have had LEEP or cryo procedures and can give you advice :) You should also be aware, if your doctor didn't tell you, that dysplasia is often caused by HPV, which is in fact an STD - you should be tested for that when you have your follow-up Pap.
The risk with having sex before your cervix has a chance to heal is that you might get an infection; cervical infections are nasty. If the discharge is dark in color, chunky, has a nasty odor, or is really frequent (ie soaking a liner), those are all signs that it is not yet fully healed.
I had sex 2 days shy of my 3 weeks, and was fine -- I'd base it on how you are feeling, how the discharge is, and all that jazz.
Definitely use condoms, though, and ones without nonoxynyl-9 to decrease the risk of irritation.
One more thing -- sex was not very pleasant for me the first few times after the procedure. I think I was remembering bits of the procedure which was not fun, and was wary of him being near that area. Even though I was all for the sex, it was difficult.
If you have a "few weeks" with your boy, I would seriously consider waiting the full three weeks .. I suspect it will make it easier all around for you.
