May. 2nd, 2002 12:09 ami sometimes get infected and/or ingrown hair follicles on my mons. they get really hot, red, swollen and tender. the only way i can take care of them is to pull the hairs out of that particular follicle with a pair of tweezers. (that sounds painful, but doesn't hurt at all compared to the horrible stabbing, pinching pain that touching the bump causes.) i used to get these every couple of months, but then i started shaving all of my hair off down there. i shaved religiously every day and didn't get a bump for several years while i did this. back in January i stopped shaving everything, and now this. does anyone else suffer from this, and what if anything can be done to prevent them besides shaving? also, i have more than one hair growing out of each of my follicles, but only on my genital area. could that be what's causing it?

Date: 2002-05-01 11:10 pm (UTC)when i shaved (which i stopped doing on the mons due to irritation, and only use depilatory cream on that particular area now), i'd be sure to rub the area every day with a semi-rough washcloth in the shower in order to prevent ingrowns.
maybe soaking a cloth in warm water and placing it over the area?
i wish i had better advice -=\ it sounds like you're in pain.

I got them occasionally when I was shaving on a regular basis, too, but not nearly as severe or nearly as often. When I did get them, it was usually 'cause I hadn't used a sharp enough razor.
The tweezer technique you mentioned has always worked for me... I quit shaving *everything* about a month ago except I went back to shaving my pits last week 'cause they itched and they smelled skanky no matter how much I washed and deodorized, and haven't had a single incident with ingrown hairs since.
I have noticed, though, that when I have gotten an ingrown hair, it's usually in a place where one hair is already growing and another from the same follicle hasn't had room to grow *out* so it grows *in*, and the one you pull out with tweezers seems like it's been forced to grow in cramped conditions. Heh. So, yeah, that probably plays a big part. Though if you look closely at your pits, you'll find the same kind of hair growth pattern there too :)
...hope this was helpful or at least coherent... meds just kicked in big time... whee
