Help please. Have any of you Superstars had laparoscopic surgery for ovarian cysts? I'm having surgery tomorrow morning to remove a 5 cm dermoid cyst and my damaged right ovary. I'm looking for experiences with recovery time because I'm leaving the US for the UK in just over a week. Any advice is welcome and thank you in advance!

It's...well, it's Tuesday, because your friendly neighborhood maintainer got confused about the days of the week yesterday! My apologies. Pretend it's MMMMonday (or don't, if Mondays bum you out), and this is your weekly dose of maintainer-curated content intended to enrich your VP experience. ;)

In honor of... Tuesday and some discussion at VP's Facebook page this week, we want to talk about Halloween costumes. But not in a "what are you going to be?" kind of way - we're going to share some links about cultural appropriation, sexualizing costumes, and other Halloween-related things you may want to read about before choosing your costumes this year (if you are someone who celebrates Halloween, of course!)

First, the links:
Native Appropriations: An Open Letter to PocaHotties

Don't Mess Up When You Dress Up, @ Bitch Magazine

A poster from a public awareness series about this issue:

Miss Representation on representation and options in Halloween costumes for kids

And lastly, Take Back Halloween, a website devoted to providing creative costume ideas, inspired by powerful, legendary, important women from all over the world. This is intended to provide an alternative to the intense focus on sexy costumes, if an alternative is what you seek. :)

After that little mini-links-roundup, let's discuss!
Were you aware of the issue of cultural appropriation in costuming already, or as younger folks? (I know I dressed up as an "Indian" as a kid, apparently my parents had no idea there was anything problematic about that.)

Have you seen racist costumes in your neighborhoods? Have you been hurt by others dressing up as someone of your culture or race?

And what about those "sexy ____(fill in the blank" costumes - what do you think about that? Would you ever dress up as a "sexy hamburger"?
(Seriously, that is really a costume.) Do you like the opportunity to get all vamped up (pun! sort of!), or does it make you uncomfortable?

If you have kids, do you have issues regarding the sexualization and/or limited options of costumes marketed to children?

And yes, a bonus question, because I can't help it: if you celebrate Halloween, what will you dress up as this year?

Hi, all! I'm doing a presentation this weekend related to menstruation. I'm hoping to do a quick history of menstruation in the US along with a review of alternative menstrual products. I'd also like to review feminist/queer commentary regarding how menstruation is treated in American culture. Does anyone have any good suggestions for favorite articles that discuss menstruation from a feminist (or queer, for that matter) perspective?

ETA: The bleeding seems to have stopped, finally, and I haven't fainted again or anything, so I think I'm going to be all right. Thank you all for the advice, though!

I've been bleeding fairly heavily for a little over two weeks, with some pretty impressive clots. I also have what I think might be symptoms of anemia - I'm pale and shaky, and I passed out earlier, though I can't be positive it's related.

I would have made a doctor's appointment by now, but... I had to leave home abruptly, and right now I'm crashing on the couch of someone I don't really know, in a city I don't know, with no transportation and absolutely no cash (so going to a clinic is out). I was hoping to get it checked out in a week or so when I'm with friends in a more familiar city, but it's gotten kind of scary over the past few days - I'm bleeding through super plus tampons in anywhere from two hours to half an hour, with golfball sized clots.

Is there anything I can do to lessen the bleeding a little so it's tolerable? I'm at a point where I'm barely getting any sleep because I'll ruin the sheets if I don't get up every few hours. I read that NSAIDs can help, but I take meloxicam daily for something unrelated and it clearly hasn't done anything for the bleeding.

What do, VP?

Vulvar Pain

I am at my wits end here and I'm hoping you folks can help me figure it out.

For a few months now, I have had some almost constant pain between my minor and major labia on my left side, sometimes on the part of the lip that faces my vagina. It's hurt pretty badly yesterday, I have more painful days than non-painful days each month. The area appears to look normal, I don't see anything out of the ordinary, and it's how it looks when I don't feel pain. I constantly look because of paranoia.
I also have pain occasionally on the very edge of the lip towards the bottom, it usually happens on my left labia but sometimes it happens on the right
I went through the same thing last year but it seemed to resolve once I stopped my Depo usage but seemed to reappear a couple of months ago when I started back up. I've been thinking it was vulvodynia but there doesn't seem to be a connection between that and Depo
There is no extra pain when the area is touched, no extra pain on the painful part of the inner lips during urination. I had a culture taken back in July that was negative for HSV.

I just called my doctor's office and was told that she isn't back in the office until Wednesday afternoon, I will be at work by then. I'm going to call back tomorrow and schedule an appointment.

For the record, it felt fine Sunday and fine yesterday morning and it started to bother me while I was at work. I wonder if part of this is in my head because I remember saying to myself how it's been a little while since it hurt and then boom. I also have pain with urination while I am active but that goes away when I rest for a while. Makes me wonder if walking a lot makes my vaginal skin rub together which causes it to be irritated. I don't remember ever been so sensitive down there. I notice very little to no pain on my days off from work.

I take acidophilus, use dye/fragrance free laundry detergent. Discharge looks and smells normal. It's driving me crazy. I got a yeast infection in July, a week after I got my Depo shot (last one was in April last year), I don't know if that could be why

I do have HPV if that matters, last two paps have been normal but I do have some GW.

I know I just posted but now I have another question and I'm kind of freaking out. I got tests for an UTI today and it came out negative. I was also tested for BV and YI and that was negative as well. The nurse tests me for STDs just I case and now I'm freaking out.

I read some of the symptoms for chlamydia and I only match a few of them abdominal pain, bleeding after intercourse. The bleeding did stop though, and it wasn't heavy bleeding.

I almost think that it's because my period is going to start soon. I think the last time I did bleed after sex was when we did do it with out a condom for the first time( I'm on birth control) and my period was due soon too. The bleeding also didn't last long after that.

I havent had any sexual partners before him(besides my ex, which we barely had sex and used a condom when we did). I am pretty sure he hasn't either since he said he hasn't had a girlfriend in a long time, though I never asked if that meant I'm his first or not.

I won't know for a few days if its anything, but then now I am freaking out. Should I be worried? How do I bring it up if I do have it? I know the nurse said that its safer to use condoms, but is it nessesary if we both haven't had many(or any) oth sexual partners?

Thanks in advance for any advise or reassurance!

... is a discussion of Hallowe'en, costumes, and cultural appropriation sparked by some of the conversation that's been going on on our Facebook page.

And following the links round-up, there's a series of questions, reproduced here :-)

Have you seen racist costumes in your neighborhoods? Have you been hurt by others dressing up as someone of your culture or race?

I have no idea how I got this but I have about an inch shallow cut near my clitortos. When I pull back the right lip, it's in between the clitortis and right lip (inside where the two meet). I didn't know it was there until I went peed and it stung.

What can I use there as an antibacterial treatment?

Thanks VPers!
