I dont know if this is the correct community to ask, but i will heh.
Me and my friend were wondering.
Lets say you have sex on your period, getting pregnant, are the chances higher or lower or how does that work?

Well the act of menstruation is due to the unfertalized egg droppin' away and it's pretty bed getting swept out. So by those lines it shouldn't be possible to get pregnant, but there are those people that say use birth control no matter what, for various reasons.

How one gets pregnant on their period, so to speak, is if they have intercourse during their period, and ovulate soon after their period. IN that way, the sperm can still be in the cervical crypts waiting for an egg to fertilize. I think I read that sperm can live 5-7 days. So, if you are still on your period on day 4 of your cycle and have unprotected sex, and ovulate on day 9, you have a chance of getting pregnant. I don't think the chances are very high however.

According to the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, it is statically impossible to get pregnant your first five days of your cycle. If you menstruate after that it can cover the presence of cervical fluid which can create an environment for sperm to survive in until you ovulate.

If I've learned anything in my 22, soon to be 23, years it's that precious little is impossible. Better safe than sorry, I say use protection anyway. Unless you want to get pregnant.

It's less likely, but it is completely possible. There's various reasons for that. Pregnancy is *most* likely when you ovulate and "least" likely around your period, but because knowing exactly when you're fertile and when you aren't is a very complicated process involving taking your temperature and checking your cervical mucus, you can't be sure at any time of the month and always need to use protection.

Besides, STIs are an issue any time.
