Hi everyone, I'm just hoping for a little peace of mind here. I've had a few UTI's in the past, mainly occuring after a lot of sex, so I began the trick of peeing before and after and that seemed to keep everything good. Then over this last weekend my boyfriend and I went away and had a wonderful time but then cut to monday morning and I'm in UTI hell. Went to the doctor, got antibiotics and cranberry for the symptoms but I'm getting paranoid now about what caused it. I hate not knowing because I want to know how to make sure it doesn't happen again. The only thing I can think is that even though I did still pee before and after sex, while we were having it I did very much feel desperate for the bathroom again. So could that be why? Needing the bathroom while having sex and ignoring it?

As far as I'm aware, ignoring the need to urinate (especially just the once) isn't associated with an increased risk of urinary tract infections -- this Go Ask Alice! (http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/consequences-holding-your-pee) article says that research has (so far) only shown that holding it can cause incontinence, not infections.
As far as potential UTI causes, and ways to avoid them, Go Ask Alice! has some helpful tips here (http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/recurring-uti-mdash-what-can-i-do) and here (http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/frequent-urinary-tract-infections-utis-help). Much of it is probably stuff you've already heard, but some of it goes beyond the usual "drink lots of water, wipe front to back, pee before/after sex, and avoid potentially irritating personal care products" advice, so I figured I'd share in case any of those avoidance tips helps you figure out what the potential cause of your current UTI might be.
Hope you're feeling lots better. :)
