Thanks for placing this under a cut. However, because the video features content that's potentially NSFW as well as triggering, we did request that the cut be descriptive (i.e., contain text to alert readers to the content of the video) in order to preserve VP as a safe space.
I disliked the word improvement too, but as soon as they showed the doctor actually slicing off the labia minor I just about died! I'm still sitting here with shivers or horror wracking my body! WHY, WOMEN!? WHY!?!?! It's your body! Love it, accept it, be proud of it! If someone doesn't like the way it looks, fuck em! They don't get to look!
Oh Jesus, I'm really afraid I'm going to dream about that tonight... :S
b) despite the fact that i have a vagina that would be the "ideal" for this review board (ie. my labia are not visible at all, and my vagina would be considered "closed"), i hate my labia just the same. my right one is significantly (well, significant to me, my partner doesn't care) longer than the other. however, i'd never do anything. perhaps this is only because mine are not too visible in general.
Having one larger than the other is pretty common. Most people with boobs have one larger than the other too, and guys often have one testicle that's either bigger or lower than the other! So don't worry about it. We humans would look pretty odd if we were symmetrical.
i'm aware! hands and feet often have a bigger partner (even if only slightly). my mother's boobs are extremely lopsided and they bother her. i'm not entirely worried about it, but it does sometimes bother me.
Thank you for posting this video I have big labia minora and always that I was different until I looked up this topic online and read a post from a waxer who said that you would be surprised at how many girls don't have a perfect looking labia. I am sexually active and I have had comments from guys that my parts look different, I think what guys see in porn makes them think all girls look the same. It doesn't bother me, we can talk about my lips all night. I have never had anyone walk out on me and I have never had to walk out on someone for what they say about my lips if they say anything at all so it doesn't matter. I also read that if u are premature born, the labia minora is not completely covered by the majora, I don't know if that is the scientific reasoning behind having protruding inner lips, never really asked a doctor, but I was 3 months premature so that is how I make sense of it my head. thou I don't like hearing girls not happy w how they look I am glad there is some attention on this topic.
I just have to say that I wasn't premature, and my labia minora are slightly longer than the outer labia. I don't know if premies are more likely to have it, but they're certainly not the only ones.
I was born 2.5 months early and I have exactly squat for minora, so I dunno if it's more likely to happen or if I'm just a fluke, either way, meh I am what I am. If I could magically make them appear that's one thing, but I'm not risking surgery for something that still works just fine for me.
Interesting about the preemie and labia correlation: It certainly fits for my body. (I was 10 weeks preemie.) However, correlation =/ causation, and all. There's a correlation between ADD and a high number of ear infections as a child, and I only had a handful of ear infections but totally have ADD.
It's very interesting, if somewhat disturbing. I never used to like my labia minora and used to want to have surgery, but thankfully found VP and their EBP before I decided to have anything done cosmetically. This further compounds my decision that no knife is ever going near my genitals.
Also, yes, please cut this, there are many reasons why people would not want this showing up on their friends page.
The things people do to their bodies astounds me. o.o I had no idea people might not like their labia minora, especially not to the extent that they'd want to have them removed. Mine are visible (actually, I always laugh when I catch a glimpse because it really looks like a clam sticking its tongue out and I think it's cute -- sorry for the TMI, I just have a lot of love for my girl ^^;) and I've never had an issue with it or had any of my partners judge me for it. I really do think it's an act of control against women. More and more, Western type societies (and even just in general), are finding ways to make women more compact and in their place. I'm sorry, but I just have to femirage against it. I don't see how this is any different than female genital mutilation, except maybe we use anesthetics and clean environments.
-sigh- This world makes me sad what it does to women and anyone who owns a vagina. :(
I have some issue here because I have perhaps a very different view based on my interest in body modifications. I am into piercings and tattoos and artistic scarring. Based on the taboo nature of some of these it is easy to show that I am doing it purely for my own vision of decorating my body how I see fit.
Boob jobs and labiaplasty hits a gray area where the reason can be a manipulation of one's self image based on how society has defined beauty. Many may legitimately be taking advantage of the opportunity to change something for themselves. Color the hair, tan, boob jobs, teeth whitening. Because I cannot pretend to know the true reason for why people do things I take an approach of "to each their own". Whatever their reasons it is only theirs to deal with not me.
As far as how this is any different from female genital mutilation is about consent and control. It's like comparing rape with couples who play with rape fantasies. Consent. One involves traumatizing a young girl against her will for the perception of virtue for a future husband. This labiaplasty is NOTHING like that and it is belittling to the previous situation to compare them. One is a first world problem, the other is a real problem.
t's like comparing rape with couples who play with rape fantasies. Consent. One involves traumatizing a young girl against her will for the perception of virtue for a future husband.
That's what I get from reading this, but I see where I misunderstood.
This is true, and in my initial shock, I failed to take this into consideration. I generally have the same attitude you do towards these sorts of things, it does sadden me when anyone changes themselves so physically out of a need to feel "more" or "better." I don't necessarily judge them for it, it just makes me feel sad that people would feel the need to put their bodies through such things.
And I do realize that there is a huge difference between labiaplasty and female genital mutilation, but I think somewhere at the core, there is a similar underlying sentiment of control of women and getting them to fit into some "ideal" of beauty. I realize it's a gray area, especially when compared with things such as breast augmentation/reduction, teeth whitening, hair dyeing, and other things of that nature, but my personal feeling on it is that it is an unnecessary commodity that just allows for women to find more things "wrong" with their bodies. This is just my personal feeling on it though, and I mean no offense towards those who would elect to have this surgery. I just hope that the women who do choose are not doing it because they feel it's the only way they will be beautiful/loved/wanted/accepted, and address those concerns in other, potentially healthier ways.
I agree 100%, but these things can become a societal norm to the point where people do have a choice, but are forced into the choice by society when it goes from something a few people are doing to something you won't be considered "normal", desirable, clean, etc... if you don't do. I feel like pubic hair removal is starting to become like that. And I doubt labioplasty will ever become like that, but it's possible...
The surgery and photo manipulation (along with hair removal, I know some people disagree and I can see shaving some but removing all of it is wierd to me...) literally makes women look prepubesent. I'm too tired to analyze that right now, but I'm sure it means something that we are trying to make our women look like children, and that that is what is considered sexy...
Infantalization of women is a common practice in many societies. It goes hand in hand with the idea that women are property rather than self-determining individuals, and strips away from them all of the power of adulthood. It's just one more step that allows men, and penis owning individuals, to assume the authority in society. "These are only women, and furthermore, they are women who look like children and must be treated thus, and beyond that, women who will strive to fit into whatever we say is the ideal for beauty, and therefore worth."
Now, am I saying this is a conscious effort on anyone's part? By no means. I don't blame men, either individually or as a group, or even women for that matter. I blame our society for allowing it to happen, and I blame those who feel opposed to it for not speaking up and being willing to educate those who are either indifferent or for it, so that they may make a more educated decision about their stance. For some, it may not be important, and they live in a "live and let live" world, but I have a problem when that attitude makes room for others to feel less than what they are and place their worth and value in another's standards. /rant
There was a photo study done of vulva in all that great and varied glory. It's a shame it's not more readily available -- as a lot more people would realize how wide variation there is...and how dull life would be without it.
And its a shame a false economy is being built on a needlessly constructed fear in making some people think a barbie doll ideal is something that should be got, over the experience of a more sensual endowment.
We have one of our own photo sets showing the diversity of vulvas! Check out the Everyday Bodies project, linked in the sidebar of the main VP community page. :)
Wow. I guess really the only other vulvas I've seen besides mine have been in porn. I didn't realize how much they vary! Mine looks very much like the "neat and tidy" ones shown on the video, so I guess I thought that was the norm. That being said, I couldn't imagine EVER doing something surgical like that to change my appearance. I don't like the shape of my boobs, but I'll NEVER have surgery to change them. I don't understand how anyone could allow someone to cut their vulva to change its appearance.
My girlfriend has labia minora which are visible and I find her vulva to be one of the most adorable things that I've ever seen. I have trouble believing that she was under the impression that she was abnormal; that she was so put-off by her genitalia that she would hardly look at or touch it, and that I was the first person to be allowed to do so.
I would kill to have my vulva resemble hers. I have difficulty accepting my genitalia for a number of different reasons, and I have considered surgery, but I won't, for monetary reasons. Yet, I'm hard-pressed to see another person's vulva and feel even an eighth of the distaste that I have for myself. I find it sad, somehow, because I was conditioned this way, I know.
I actually never realized (until several years ago) that there are people who feel discomfort with their vulvas-I remember that vulvas are like faces (oh dear, I think I learned that from Tyra...) so of course there will be variation. I remember my ex's younger sister may have made a comment about the way their ~supposed to look and we both chimed in with the face analogy (same parts, different look!) I love that there's variation, if I ever am sexual with another vulva owner, I'd love to see differences.
my friend actually posted this on FB, and it has left me shocked for the last few days. What I find most disturbing about it that no one has mentioned is that it leaves women looking like little girls. Why do we want women to look like little girls?
But at the same time, Australia has also banned porn with women with small breasts because it's too much like child porn...
