Hello everyone,

I recently lost my virginity (two weeks ago). After the sex I noticed that things just felt "wetter" than normal down there. So I got up and went to the bathroom and I had bled EVERYWHERE. It was horrible. Now nothing hurt me at all. I don't think it could have been my hymen breaking because things have been up there before and I've used tampons in the past. Also, there was way to much blood for it to be that if it was. I was even still bleeding for a bit afterward, so much so that I had to put on a pantyliner.

What could this be from? I don't have regular periods and I thought it might be from that but I'm not sure. I'm just curious to see if other people have had this experience before. It freaked me out quite a bit because I definitely was not expecting that. I'm just worried it will happen again the next time. I have a gyno appointment scheduled but I wanted to ask here to see if anyone else has had this happen.

Thanks for any advice =]

Same thing happened to me when I lost my virginity, no pain and I'd used tampons and toys prior but still bled after the first time. It's probably a bit of blood from the hymen and possibly the cervix too depending on how deep you got.

The hymen doesn't break all at once -- it stretches, and is often not very "covering" to begin with, so tampons and toys may go in just fine, till eventually something tears that last bit, and woah, blood! Further, the hymen doesn't always have a lot of nerve endings! So I'd strongly suspect that you basically tore the hymen (rather than stretching it), and either things were so entertaining you didn't notice, or the tear wasn't anywhere that had nerve endings to speak of.

Torn hymens can bleed pretty amazingly, and even spot for a few days after, so I wouldn't rule it out at all.

On the other hand, jostling everything around down there could've sparked a period, too! Bodies are wonky. O:>

If you have irregular periods, I would like to show you my pet hobby-horse, Thyroid Issues. I ignored all my symptoms for years (like, maybe 15 of them!), and when I was finally diagnosed and treated, symptoms I thought were "normal" went away or got much less annoying! It made me a fanatic about recommending that people get at least their TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) tested, and get the numbers. It should be between .4 and 4.

Hope all goes well!

My mom got diagnosed with extreme hypothyroidism by accident. She nagged me till I got tested (since I was still foisting all my symptoms off on other things). I had to ask to be tested; none of my doctors put together my symptoms either. When I got treated, certain things I'd taken for granted as "just normal" got less bad, and I realized I had been hypothyroid for SO LONG... Rargh!

Ahem. Anyway, I'd say that there's no harm in getting tested (well, they have to draw blood, which always sucks, but...), and could be great benefit. Don't settle for the doctor saying "normal," though. Make them tell you what the numbers are! Being a politely pushy patient gets me better care than just letting the doctors try to figure stuff out. (I'm also low on ferritin. Another test I wound up having to ask for!)

I bled the first 8 or so times that I had sex, not counting other activities that made me bleed a bit when I first became "sexually active" (I hate that term, it makes me think we need an activate button or something).

You make me wish I had some superhero icon, or a really steampunky one, or one with a big red button, so I could use it and go "SEXUALITY POWERS... ACTIVATE!" O:D

Agreeing that hymens can be very stubborn here!

OP - Mine did not tear until I was 30. I'd used tampons for 18 years, had internal ultrasounds and manual examinations, a d&c, Mirena insertion, aand a whole lot of sex. The sex wasn't with men, and involved objects that would dwarf an average penis. It just would not budge. Then one day my gf gently slid her thumb into me and POP, no more membrane! I bled and everything. She's given birth and still has bits of hers too.

Wow, that's nuts! When I lost my virginity, I just assumed that I didn't have a hymen (I've heard that some girls' just ... disappear? or get torn/broken/stretched away by other activities), because there was no pain and no blood. Guess I'll have to see what other sexual adventures bring me, now that I'm no longer in a monogamous relationship. XD

Happens to me sometimes and I generally chalk it up to what archangelbeth said - all the action going on in there sometimes sparks a period (or just knocks loose anything that was hanging around).

I agree with what others wrote and just wanted to add, sometimes the amount of "blood" you see isn't indeed all blood. The actual blood mixes with your bodies natural fluids and then the amount that comes out is much more than the amount of the true blood is. It's the same way with periods. You don't actually lose that much blood during a period, it's just mixed with vaginal fluids so it appears as a lot more than it really is.

Do you generally have any PMS symptoms when you get your period? I know that when I lost my virginity, I wasn't due to have my period for about two-two and a half weeks, and Tada! Period in four in days! :D But I suspected mine was coming because I had all my usual PMS symptoms (breast tenderness, cramping, weird cravings). I looked it up and discussed it with my other non-virgin girl friends, and there seemed to be a consensus that, for whatever reason, first-time sex seems to induce a period in a lot of women.

Now, this could be the case for you, and if so, I wouldn't worry about it, but it could be what some of the other commenters have suggested as well. I advise talking to your gyno, just like you have planned, in order to settle any lingering fears/questions you have. :)

Ah, then it's more likely what the others have been saying then. I hope you get things figured out when you go to the gyno. :)

I'd had sex THREE TIMES before my hymen broke. So I was (more than) a little concerned when I heard from behind me "uh oh." I said "what???" thinking, omg the condom broke. I hear back "you're bleeding." I said "oh, ok, whatever, KEEP GOING!" LOL

Hymens do weird things, so maybe yours just wasn't all the way gone. :)

i lost my virginity years ago & have had a baby & i still have this happen occasionally. i asked my CNM about it & she said it's common to have stuff get knocked around & then flow out, even if you aren't due for your period right at that time. in my case i don't get a period due to my IUD but i still have this situation after rough sex or using a toy.

Mine was badly torn when I lost my virginity, and yes, there was a lot of blood. I was on a cruise ship at sea at the time - away from my mother, and I was terrified I'd broken something important (other than my hymen!).

Years later, I can still see the tear at my vaginal opening - it kind of looks like a tatty ear that cats get when they fight, like a little bite taken out.

Don't worry, you're fine. :)
