Journals with layouts like this -- they look nice, but they confuse the ever-loving hell out of me since I can never tell what or who I'm responding to.
i like it a lot. i use the same layout for one of my communities as well as for my personal LJ. i think you're right about the comments, though, it gets confusing to keep it in the component layout sometimes. that's an option that can be disabled.
I like the S2 layouts like this, I use it myself - the comments do get a tad confusing if I have a lot of LJ windows open because the comments look rather like the journal or community itself the way which it is set out, but all in all I think it's fine.
I didn't like it at first either, but maybe we should just give it a little time to figure out and get accustomed to. I'm sure the admin were just looking to revamp the look --sometimes change is good and productive.
I use a pre-OSX mac and nothing past OS9.x.x will run on my machine. I can't afford to buy a brand-spankin' new computer. None of the browsers are being updated for Macs like mine when new standards come out. LJ is developing for the most recent standards. As a result, S2 breaks Opera and looks CRAPTASTIC on IE. Sometimes it's *completely* broken and illegible. Netscape isn't any better.
I tend to reply less when folks use S2. I might have to dig out the code I can use to force a layout to my template or the default template for purposes of replying.
I thought you could do that already? When i go to Manage Info it's an option for me to click. I don't do it since I want to see the different styles, but you can do it.
Poor babe! I tend to like things kept simple, even when using a computer which can support elaborate crap (and I don't half the time). I think I would have been happy if a lot of technology had just stopped at what it was in about 1998.
i hate it, too. the comments get confusing for me and it isn't worth the price of it looking pretty. i'm getting sick of it and don't enjoy this place as much due to it. makes it more difficult. i dunno. glad i'm not the only one to feel negatively about it. xo.
you can view all comment pages (of journals and communities that have friended or belong to) in your own journal style by going to Personal Info and clicking "view all comment pages in my journal style."
i was all excited when i read that and then i realized what you said was the opposite of what i want! i don't want comments in any journal style, i want them on my nice lj login looking page. the problem for me with the comments to this community is that they look like a journal page and not a comment page. yuck!
I can't read it easily. I had to zoom in to read the text (thank you Opera!) and the colours are pretty, but not friendly to my eyes.
I was going to join the community.... But this style is actually a pretty good reason for me to stay shy and not do it. :) (And thank you for the excuse!)
Oh, please don't stay shy. If you add the community to your friends list, this setup isn't as troublesome, and the only time you have to view it this way is to read the comments. But there's so much to be gained here for so little effort, and I hope you won't be scared off just because of a small inconvenience!
It looks very nice, though it's a little bit inconvienent, I think, because I use Linux and my web browser is not handling this layout very well. But, that isn't going to discourage me from using such a wonderful community. I feel it's very much worth the inconvenience, considering all the good that is done here.
I love the S2 style and use it in my personal journal. You can view comments pages in whatever style you have set up in your journal by clicking "view all comment pages in my journal style" in the manage info section from the main LJ page. I think a lot of communities may be switching to this style, as this is the second on my list so far.
To confusing to find the reply button, have to search for it, which you shouldn't HAVE to do! WHy not just go back to the old way, so that everyone is happy >:(
