To initiate menstruation your uterus releases chemicals called prostaglandins. They cause the muscle of the uterus to contract and shake off the dead lining. Some people make too many prostaglandins, others are sensitive to the small amounts made, and all the muscles in the pelvic cradle start to contract like the uterus. This might cause more frequent toilet visits, gas, nausea, diarrhoea etc.
