My girlfriend and I live together and spend a lot of time together, yet our periods never synched (it's been a year and a half). What makes people not synch up? Can we do anything to make it so that we do?

Actually, research has been mixed about whether women's periods actually sync or not. Think about all-girls boarding schools, colleges, dorms, etc...we don't all sync up, right? My dormmate from a few years ago...we never synced up, even though we spent like...all our time together. There have been studies that show that it may happen, but those aren't entirely definite either (could be other factors).

Because even the research is super mixed on whether it actually happens or not, there is nothing that will just make you both sync up, unless you both go on HBC and time it so your "sugar pill" week is the same week.

Perhaps you weren't syncing up with them, but they were syncing up with you? In other words, they might've been "pheromone responders" -- their bodies sensitive to the pheromones of other female bodied people's menstruation. (This is all assuming that syncing up isn't just coincidence, mind; it is a very untested theory.) If you're actually un-sensitive to pheromones in that way (despite possibly producing stronger ones yourself?), and your girlfriend is also not sensitive to them... You two may never sync up without HBC. (Or even then, depending on how you came off it!)
