The best thing I've found for clitoral stimulation that is small, easy to manipulate, relatively quiet, powerful, AND battery operated (one AA battery does the trick) is a vibrator called The Pocket Rocket. You can buy them waterproof for in the shower, hot tub, bath tub etc. as well. I can't remember what I paid for mine, but it wasn't expensive. adam and eve.com sells them.
I've never been able to climax without clitoral stimulation, and I prefer a vibrator or tongue. Penetration plus clitoral stimulation is most excellent for me) but since you're not having sex and unsure regarding a dildo and penetration I'd say go with a clitoral vibrator if you want to try something different than the pillow-humping thing.
