Would this technique be better then the ThinPrep that I currently get for my pap smear? My family has a history of cervical cancer, so I'm always into the new techniques for pap smears.

I beleive they're refering to thin prep because that's exactly the way thin prep works.

Liquid cytology (if I'm remembering the name right at 7am on little coffee....arrrgh!) is currently available in the States. My doc told me about it last year (and we used it) as I was in for a checkup and on the spur of the moment decided to include a gyn exam and pap even though I was at the very end of my period - with the new test, even though there was a bit of blood hanging out in the sample they could still read results well.

Oh, I'm wordy and obtuse this morning. Must go get more coffee.

I 'shadowed' two different family doctors in rural Ontario this summer (one in Elliot Lake and one in Cambellford) and both clinics were using the new liquid cytology already. I was pretty impressed, since I'd heard about the new way of doing it but I wasn't sure that it was very widespread yet - I think my last Pap smear (at the student health clinic on campus) was done the traditional way. But yeah, family docs and pathologists all seem to be pretty fond of this new techique because it gives a better sample and more accurate results. :)

When I first saw your post, I said to myself, "I fucking hope so." But when I read the article, it raised some questions for me. Where exactly do they put this liquid, and how do they get it there? Maybe I missed that part. One of my concerns is whether or not its more comfortable than a pap smear. (My MSN address is "i_hate_pap_smears@hotmail.com".)
