Hey guys,

I am in desperate need of my annual gyn exam and some blood work (and maybe some birth control), but I am currently a grad student with no health insurance and no job. I was thinking about going to Planned Parenthood and I've never been there before. I would go to my campus health center but they charge $70 for the annual and another $30 for blood work (and I'm super poor).

I plan on calling them tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone in my situation could tell me around how much they have paid at PP for an annual. I know prices vary by where you are in the country, but I just want to get some sort of idea.

Thank you so much!!! :D

UPDATE!!: I called PP and they said that it would be $127....yikes! I called up the public health department and they said that it would be FREE! Yay! Thanks so much for all of your comments! :D

When I was uninsured and broke, I went to a women's clinic, not a PP, but it offered gyno/abortion services. I think it was $65 for the pap smear, but I didn't have bloodwork at the time. So even if PP isn't an option for you maybe you can research your area and see what else is available.

I've never been to Planned Parenthood, but I have gone to the free county clinic. And I think PP and county clinics kind of do things the same.

For me, they did a pay scale. Depending on how much you make, if you have a job and things like that. Normally, I've experienced if I didn't have a job, everything was free (birth control, exam, blood tests, etc.) At one point I was making $7/hr and working no more than 30 hours a week, and I only paid $8 for birth control (Depo Provera) and the exam itself was free. I currently have insurance and I only had to pay $10 for the visit, and I got blood work & my annual exam.

In short; they'll do a pay scale. For the most part, it should be free or relatively cheap.

But again, like I said, I've never been to Planned Parenthood. Don't shoot me for wrong information, lol.

You're welcome. I'd definitely recommend calling PP and just see what their options are. And call your county's clinic and see if they offer anything.

At my Planned Parenthood, I go by a donation basis because I don't have any form of income. When I got my IUD there I went expecting to pay, but it was free. I obviously opted to donate, haha.

Our free clinic is the same way; it's completely free with the option to donate (they gotta get the condoms somehow, right?) however much you can. I actually like having the option, because even just a little bit helps.

When I was a student in Atlanta, my PP had a sliding scale and I never paid for exams. My pills were $5/month. However, I later lived near another PP that didn't have a sliding scale at all. It depends on how they're funded.

you should edit your post and say what state you're in b/c PP chages different per state depending on how much funding they get-- Cali is free while Colo charges an arm and a leg

Colorado?

I got free exam and IUD at a PP in CO, and I was in the same situation (no job, starving student :-P)

I am in california and didn't pay anything for my blood work, pap or pills. I am dirt poor.

As one poster above me stated, the funding is based on what area you're in. I'm in Western Washington, and if you qualify for their "Take Charge" program, everything is free. It's not difficult to qualify; even if you make enough to support yourself, they assess how much extra money you have, not what you make. So even if you can live by yourself, you may qualify. Being that you are a student with presumably little to no income, they would, in all likelihood, fund everything.

I get my yearly for free, and when I was on the pill I got it for free. When I opted to get a Paragard, they did the consultation and the insertion for free. I haven't been in since I started living in an apartment with my boyfriend, so I'm not sure if I qualify anymore, but I should have insurance any day, and it won't be a big deal. :)

Good luck!

What blood work would you get done at a gynecologist? I'm curious as to whether I've been missing something I'm supposed to do.

When I go to the gynecologist, I get STD/STI blood work. I do it every year, for putting my mind at ease. I don't necessarily have to, but it' something that I feel I need to do for myself.

When I was living in Michigan I was either unemployed or part-time employed making minimum wage. The two times that I went to PP the exam (and birth control) were either free/donation or (I think) less than $50.

I know this is kind late.

I went to PP in mid September.
I am on unemployment and have no insurance.
You have to call and ask which PP clinics have something called Plan X. Only certain centers have that program. Which is where you get the service free or discounted.

I got my pap and my bc pills for free.
