Hi VP,

My crotch is itching like mad--mostly my inner labia and the entrance to my vagina. I'm hoping it's a yeast infection but scared it's something else (usually mine are pretty mild, I'm hoping this is just an exceptionally bad one, but I don't know). I am going to see a doctor about it if it doesn't go away in the next two or three days, but in the meantime, could someone please please recommend something to kill the itch? Would putting yogurt or garlic up there hurt anything if it turns out not to be yeast?

Thank you!!

Funny you ask, I posted recently asking about using yogurt to prevent what I thought might be a YI-in-the-making (but also thought might just be me being paranoid, as I have a new partner and often get a YI soon after hooking up with a new partner). Some lovely VPers told me that yogurt (plain, no sugar, active cultures) really can't hurt anything. It does sound like a YI to me, based on my experiences with them. If you want to try using yogurt, what has worked best for me is to take a tampon out of its applicator and fill the applicator with yogurt (I kind of drip it down inside with a spoon). It's messy, but then you can just insert it like you would if you were inserting a tampon. I've done this before bed for two nights and am probably going to do it for one more just to be on the safe side.

Yup, I recommended this to a couple people too. It really does help & the one time I used Monistat the 24hr one my crotch felt like it might burn off & I would die. It was the most horrible thing I've EVER felt in the whole world. Do not use that stuff or if you do at least use the week long one, I've heard the week long one doesn't cause that sort of reaction in most women. After using it I read on some messageboards that that product had caused severe pain in numerous women! Ouch! Imagine your vagina burned with acid, thats pretty much how it felt all night. I've never had to ice my vag.

Eek, I always cringe when I hear horror stories about the 1-Day Monistat. That's the only kind I've ever used and it works just fine for me, but I always add a disclaimer when I recommend it to people since it seems that so many vaginas dislike it!

The SAME thing happened to me, I thought I was going to die!! My doc said that it may be because of an oil base rather than a water base. Either way I'll never use that again. As if having a YI wasn't bad enough....

I have never used garlic but I have used yogurt before and you should be safe with that. I also recommend a nice cool bath then make sure you dry off very well. Then if you can go without panties or bottoms, I usually just wear a long Tshirt. Do this as much as you can. I have even sat in front of a fan to get air circulation and at least for me it seems to help with the itching.

my doctor recommended hydrocortisone ointment at 1% for my itching. on the label it does include genital/rectal as places to use it so i'd give it a try. i'm currently using it for what seems to be an irritation from soaps, although my itching is mostly on the top/front area (just where the hairline meets the skin above the clitoris) and not accompanied by any yeast or anything like that.
