Okay, over the past two months or so I've been suffering/battling a gawd awful yeast infection.  I've been to planned parenthood, convenient care, and even the emergency room to try and find out if it's really evil yeast or something worse.  Usually I've been given Diflucan or Terazol and sent on my way without any answers. Tomorrow I'm finally going to my family doctor (insurance issues have delayed this) and I hope to get some answers.

I know I need to ask about/get tested for:
My hbc and if it's a contributing factor
My blood sugar, should I fast before the appointment?
HIV

Can you lovely VPers think of anything else I may need to ask my doctor or get tested for?

This may be a repeated question (and if it is, I apologize), but have you started any sort of acidiphilous supplement? I find that no matter what prescriptions the doctors throw my way, if I don't have the supplement it's useless.

Are you generally prone to yeast infections? If so, the infections may have developed a resistance to drugs like Diflucan and Terazol and you may need more than the normal dosage to clear it up. Are you on the pill for birth control? That can change the moisture level in your vagina and cause yeast to grow. And I agree, I swear by acidophilus.

Ditto on the more than one treatment/prolonged treatment. I usually have to have two Difulcan's before something clears up.

Also test for Bacterial Vaginosis (sp?) I have had dr's test for that after the YI treatment doesn't work.

Your HPC could be a contributing factor, It alters your hormones which can alter your PH which can lead to fun.

If you are only on HBC for BC and where happy with your period ect, you may want to look into a a nonhormonal IUD. I have the paragard & <3 it. No hormones is lovely.

Though I don't know what your GP would know over planned parenthood or a Gyno.

Good luck!

I'm curious, do you have type 1 diabetes? Your mention of checking a blood glucose made me wonder, but then again if you are diabetic you would just test your glucose level yourself, so never mind! Anyway, the reason I was asking is because women with type 1 get yeast infections more frequently.

Good luck! Sorry I don't have any real advice. Oh, I guess if you are wanting your blood glucose level to be tested at the appointment, you should fast before hand (I think 12 hours is what is normally recommended), but then again you may fast and then get there and have the doctor tell you to come back for another appointment for the test.

i assume you've had cultures and you just have run-of-the-mill candida? if not, you need to have a culture to see what you actually have. i find it extremely odd that terazol and/or diflucan wouldn't clear up a simple YI.

I've had yeast infections that diflucan helped...but didn't entirely eliminate. Or at least, if it was totally gone, I got another one right away. Boric acid kicked those yeast in their collective ass though!

have you had luck with boric acid for BV at all?

also, i was just surprised that BOTH didn't do it - they're both pretty effective (especially two pills of diflucan; one often doesn't work).

I haven't used boric acid to treat BV, so I can't help you there. :)

others have suggested it and i'm considering trying it, but i'm scared of side effects. any for you? i just want to know what to expect. :/

Oh no, no side effects at all. I know boric acid sounds kind of scary, but its actually very gentle. Its not a strong acid. And its an ingredient in eye wash! They dilute it for that of course, but still.

People use it full strength, in capsules all the time. But if you're nervous about that (or just don't feel like making capsules!) you can just use it as a douche. I use about 1 heaping TB to 60ml water.

I've never felt even the slightest bit of burning or irritation, and have never heard from anyone who has.
