So this is my 3rd YI in as many months. I'm pretty sure I've determined that they are now happening due to my boyfriend being infected and re-infecting me. I've found that Monistat (both the 1-day and 3-day) doesn't work for me. I've tried taking 2-3 vinegar baths, which didn't seem to do anything. I know diflucan works for me, but I'm kind of embarrassed about going to the doctor for a 3rd prescription in such a short amount of time, so I decided I'd like to try acidophilus capsules first. However, I have a few questions.

I bought something called PB 8 - pro-biotic acidophilus for life - the directions say to take 2 capsules a day and not to exceed the recommended dosage. However, I was wondering if I could take 2 capsules orally a day, and insert 1 vaginally at night? If anyone has done this, did it cure your YI? How many days did you  have to insert them in order to find relief? Did the capsule complete melt overnight? Did it cause a lot of messy discharge?

Also, do you think taking acidophilus orally for a few days is enough to treat my boyfriend's YI, or should he get some jock-itch cream to use in combination?

I'm gonna give this a few days before calling the doc for a prescription. This thing is really starting to get old. I'm tired of my vag hurting and itching.

One semi-unrelated question: this current YI started right around the time my period started. The period was pretty heavy for like 2-days, then I took the vinegar bath and my period basically stopped! Coincidence?

Thanks!

Sorry for asking so many questions! I feel like such a noob when it comes to all of this stuff.

Hey, I don't have any answers for you, but I just bought my first lot of acidophilus capsules hoping to stop constand infections. So, good luck :)

I'm taking them orally three times a day as a preventative measure.

I've taken more than the recommended dosage of acidophilus capsules and I personally didn't have any negative side effects. (I think the directions said take 1 a day...I took two or three and then used one vaginally)

For me the pill really didn't disolve all the way overnight. I had a significant amount of powder pill residue in the morning. Also I personally didn't find it effective enough to cure my YI alone. It did, however, reduce symptoms to some degree.

I gave some to my bf more as a preventative measure when I found out I had a YI. So it probably wouldn't hurt anything.

I love acidophillus. Generally whenever I get an infection these days I don't bother with OTC methods or even Diflucan because they don't work so well for me anymore. Instead I eat a ton of all natural, plain low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese (check the labels to make sure they contain acidophillus cultures) and I insert 3 capsules a night for 3-5 nights, depending on the severity of the infection. If I have external irriation, I break open an acidophillus capsule (I buy Nature's Bounty) and mix the powder with a tiny bit of water then I rub the mixture over my vulva and it has an amazing cooling effect! This is just what I've found to be effective though. Hope it helps!
