I heard that the pill can cause severe birth defects in children, if you continue to take it during pregnacy. This could happen if you were pregnant and then got on the pill... What I want to know is, if this is true, why don't doctors do a mandatory pregnancy test before putting someone on the pill?

implantation bleeding can resemble a period..

I trust Planned Parenthood on this one. (http://www.plannedparenthood.org/BIRTH-CONTROL/7MYTHS.HTM#7)

my doctor did make me do a pregnancy test before he put me on BC. and if i/the dr messed up somehow ( we both miscalculated the time span before my next shot and ended up being 2 weeks late for next shot) i got a pregnancy test. and at the time of my yearly exam i got one.

he was really good about making sure i wasnt pregnant. i wish more doctors were. my friend was pregnant while on BC and lost the babies (she was preg. with twins). she didnt know she was pregnant untill she was miscarrying.

actually, as far as I know, there haven't been any conclusive studies on this.
