[identity profile] llama-friendly.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] vaginapagina
Hi everyone! I went through the tags and read the shaving entries but didn't read too much about my question.

I'm looking to shave my nether regions. I won't wax because it hurts too much, but I want to get my vulva pretty hair-free. I have hair pretty much every where down there though. I even have hair on the inner lips of my vagina and I'd also like to get rid of that. I plan on trimming the whole area first and then using a nice, new razor and some shaving cream to shave it. But how do I go about getting rid of the hair on my inner lips. It seems to be much more sensitive in that area and I'm afraid I'll cut myself if I even begin to shave there. Has anyone had this problem and successfully shaved that area?

Thanks a bunch!

i have it everywhere too... just be VERY careful everytime... the first couple times especially, and then you'll get the hang of it... definitely trimming and then shaving is a good idea... i dont' even use shaving cream anymore, i'm to paranoid of it gettin all up in there and causing problems...

Do you know what works well? I know it sounds weird, but it absolutely works. Use baby powder, cornstarch, or something of the like and go with the grain :) It's a nice smooth shave.

Just to clarify, this is for the whole area. I usually end up having to touch up the inner lips with something wet (shaving cream) when I'm finished.

I used to shave there, but very, VERY carefully and slowly. I rarely did any damage, as long as I took my time and there was plenty of light. It gets tricky though, especially as soaps and shaving creams make things so gosh darn slippery! So slow and steady and gently is your best bet, if you feel you must shave.

I wax now, via professional. It really only hurt the first time (har har), and for me at least, it was much easier to take when it was someone other than myself inflicting the pain (I would psyche myself out when I did it at home and wouldn't get ANYTHING done). And anything that's left in the bits I could pluck easily. It really is a LOT safer, as shaving can cause razor burn, which causes itching, which causes touching, which can potentially cause bad things :P

But again, I did shave for a while and nothing seriously bad happened, save the very occasional nick, which I had to train myself to leeeave aloooone!

No worries! Like I said, shaving worked fine for me, so you don't have to wax to get thorough results. Another tip I would suggest is make sure your razor is not only new, but also nice and grip-able/maneuverable. For me, Venus = good, Big random disposable pink thing my sister gave me once = no so good.

And yeah, it was a weird thought at first having someone see my vag who wasn't a doctor or a significant other. But I was lucky to find a really cool girl on my first shot at pro-waxing, and now that I've gone a few times I can honestly equate it to having a bandaid ripped off by someone who's like my hairdresser, hehe.

i would say just go slow?

Invest in one of these:

I've had two and they've costed me very little money (like under NZ $5 both times).

I still can't see it! You've got my curiosity raging. Do you have a link or something I can use?

I use a special washing oil when I shave those sensitive areas, and it works MUCH better than shaving foam :)

inner lips? You mean actually on the pink bits?

Eh, I have a small amount of hair there. its not as much as the hair elsewhere down there, but there's definitely some on the inner lips between them and the outer lips. i found that shaving that means almost immediate stubble which ITCHES LIKE HELL and is also VERY irritating/painful, so I leave it the hell alone now, exept to trim it up.

Oh yeah, it's not the idea that there could be hair there that freaks me out. I know that a couple little guys grow in that region. It's the idea of shaving it (particularly to this sensitive skinned person) that scares the geebus out of me.

Labia razor burn: Don't do it.

For what it's worth, I've been shaving my inner labia on and off for oh, about 14 years, and I've never cut them. The trick for me is to make sure to pull sections of each labium very tight between two fingers -- I hold my fingers in a V shape and pull the skin very, very taut. It's when they go slack that you run the larger risk of a nick.

Finding the right positions to do this in can involve a bit of contortion -- I find standing up, one foot on the side of the tub works best for me.

As far as stuff to use -- I've heard that Cetaphil is gentle enough for most vulvas. I use unscented Dove for shaving the vulva, and that hasn't failed me yet.

Another position that works fairly well for me is sitting on the toilet, lid up, seat down, and going at it from that vantage point. It helps in keeping things tight and lowers your risks for nicks.

When I shave the inner area, I use body wash instead of shaving cream, cos I'm afraid the shaving cream'd get up in there, yknow. I do shave there though, just real carefully.

Electric razors! You'll never get a shave as perfectly smooth as you can get with shaving cream, but there's no danger of cutting yourself. Be careful you don't accidentally pull hairs out, though.

I trim the hair on my inner labia majora (the outer "lips") with my spouse's old electric razor's beard-trimmer attachment. It leaves a short, soft stubble, for me.

I've only cut myself once shaving the "inner lips."

I tend to use Body Wash and a fresh razor and I pull the skin really taught and I've never really had a problem.

hopefully you're talking about the inside of the outer lips (labia majora).

you won't cut yourself, just be careful.

if you've got hair growing in your inner lips (labia minora-- please reference a chart) i think that might be a little questionable.

That's what I was thinking, but I am glad that you said it.

How so? It's probably less common (and maybe less noticeable even when it happens) than hair on the inside of the labia majora, but I've had at least one partner who's had hair on her labia minora -- and from the comments here, it looks like neither she nor the OP are the only ones. I only did a quick Google search because I'm on my way out the door, but I'm not able to find anything to suggest that it's abnormal, questionable, or related to any kind of problems.

i meant questionable regarding shaving it off. i wouldn't take a razor to my labia minora even if i had hair growing there.

Ah. I suppose that's reasonable, though I wouldn't take a razor to my labia majora, even though I do have hair growing there. Hair removal is definitely a very individual thing, both in terms of aesthetic preference and what one's body will handle. Apparently a fair number of people are more willing to remove hair than I am, even including hair on the inner lips. :)

I have hair there, and I stand with one leg up on the bath, and pull the skin taut. I use conditioner (it works!) to shave with instead of shaving foam. I've never cut myself there, just go slow and make sure you can see what you're doing, all those folds and everything make stuff tricky!

What about using a depilatory cream? I find shaving it keeps it smooth/nice for about ten seconds before it gets bumpy and irritating :(

I would never, ever, ever put depilatory creams on mucous membranes. *beth crosses her legs very tightly and meeps with great patheticness*

I'll usually shave there with a single or double bladed razor (not like a 4 bladed venus--I find it too easy to nick with that :( ) and I don't use any shave cream or anything in that area for visibility reasons. I also occasionally pluck stray hairs there, but maybe I'm weird.

(And I once accidentally used nair there---never felt anything more painful in my life, don't do it!!)
