Lybrel...

Has anyone tried or been on Lybrel? I'm on Quasesnse now, and have been for the past 3 years, and for the last two years, i've been skipping the placebos and not having a period at all. It's just too painful and my periods are too heavy and long. She told me that it was not a good idea to do that, as Quasense was not the type of pill to completely skip your period, and she informed me about a new(ish) pill called Lybrel, and i'm on the website right now looking into it and it sounds like something I would definitely be interested in.
My questions are, is anyone on it, or tried it? Did you like it? Anything I should know? Did your insurance approve it or no?

There's no reason why you need to be on a certain type of pill (ie. the pill with no placebos) to skip your period. I'm on yasmin and i skip my period months and months at a time (i don't even know how long I've gone without a period now, at least six months or longer). So whoever gave you that info is either pushing for that pill for no reason or just doesn't know what they are talking about. Skipping your period is safe, and doesn't require a "certain" brand. Typically any monophasic pill will work, as long as your body can tolerate it.

Your doctor was incorrect. There's absolutely nothing different about Lybrel other than that it is packaged and branded without placebo weeks.

The only difference between Lybrel and the pill you're on now is that Lybrel has a slightly lower dosage of both hormones (levonogestrel, the progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, the estrogen) -- other than that, it uses the same hormones as many other birth control pills, including yours.

So basically -- while there's certainly no reason not to try Lybrel, and while the lower dosage may work out better for you, it also may have the exact same effects, or worse effects, and there's no reason you couldn't keep permanently skipping periods on Quasense.

I say if Quasense is working for you to skip your periods, stick to it.

Hmm. Queen mentioned the Lybrel hormones are less. I think there is a connection with lower hormones and greater breakthrough bleeding.

IANAD but as I understand it breakthrough is always a possibility unless something is inhibiting the creation of lining. It might be a situation where suffering a placebo week every so often might lessen breakthroughs later. When I stacked I could go three to five months then got breakthrough so I'd do my placebo, let it clear out, and then go back to stacking. Now mine we're not hellish so that was an easy choice for me but something to consider with your doctor.

Then it certainly wouldn't hurt to try another brand. =)

I went into PP in hopes of getting on Lybrel, they just gave me 17 packs of Desogen (1 year if you skip the placebos). :3 I wanted to go on Lybrel, because I figured it would be cheaper to not have to buy the 5 extra packs, but apparently Oregon has very nice help for low income people to get birth control, so they gave me the Desogen and said to just skip the placebo pills.

I was on Lybrel for three months and while it mellowed my emotions out, I had a nearly constant discharge of what looked like old blood. It was brownish red, and not very... sexy or appealing. The cramps weren't bad at all, though. My boy and I eventually got used to it, and it was nice not having an actual period.... but the constant icky brownness wasn't pleasing.
