So I started noticing a thick white, sometimes stringy and watery, sour smelling (non-itchy, non-burning) discharge about 7 months ago.
1) Thinking it was a YI, I went to the clinic at my school to be sure. The doctor agreed it was a YI and told me to use Monostat. Well, I used Monostat 3 times (2 three-day and 1 seven-day treatments) and got no results.
2) SO I made an appt with my primary care physician (because I honestly don't trust my school doctors), who was sure I had BV. He prescribed me with Flagyl, but the symptoms came back within a day or two of stopping the meds.
3) THEN I got a referral to a gynecologist thinking that since vaginas are their specialty, they might know something the other doctors didn't. They also thought I had BV, and prescribed me with a single-day clindamycin cream to put inside myself. For three days the cream dripped out of me and when it was finally all gone my symptoms were STILL there. (For the record, I took the cyndamycin when I was away from my SO, so I did not have sex during the treatment so I know, for this treatment, anyway, that it didn't just get transfered back to me by him; however, I suppose it may be a possibility for the other treatments?).
4) I went back to the gyno 2 weeks ago, and told them my story. The initial BV, Trich, PH and YI tests were negative, so he told me to use Acedic Acid to see if it balanced me out a little.
5) This morning they called me saying I have gardenella vaginalis, and told me to take a week's worth of Flagyl again to take care of it.

AM I CRAZY? I took Flagyl already and it didn't get rid of my symptoms so what makes them think this time is different?
And, seriously, how many appointments and how many copays and how many prescriptions later will they finally figure out what the hell is wrong with my vagina?
What do you all think??

And finally, if my man really does have the infection and is, in fact, just giving it back to me every time we have sex, what kind of treatment would he have to undergo? Would they treat such a thing at planned parenthood (his mom is VERY against premarital sex so she can't know about this)?

Gardnarella Vaginalis is just a fancy, fancy way of saying "BV". I had incredibly resistant BV for a few months. It took a few rounds of every kind of antibiotic under the sun to get rid of it, but once it was gone it didn't come back. I was on and off the Flagyl for almost a month, but by the end of that... it was gone. Joy!

Good luck.

Some times docs are a little lax at reviewing the files before talking to you. Talk to them again and remind them that it's been recurrent and discuss a longer course of meds. It sounds like it works, since it remitted at one point, but then flares up because it hasn't all been killed off a longer course will probably do the trick. IANAD

Also, ask about the trading it back and forth, I'm not at all sure.

D: How sucky. Since it's bacterial, I wonder if acidophilus help prevent it or if it though it might be like goldenseal where you can't take it daily or you lose the benefits. Boo all around.

I know how frustrated you must feel right now. I was diagnosed with BV last year and it took almost 6 months to get rid of it. BV is basically just an overgrowth of bacteria that is normally found inside the vagina. After doing a little research, I found that Flagyl kills both good and bad bacteria. Your vag needs good bacteria to stay balanced, which is why BV often comes back after taking a round of Flagyl. I finally cured mine by taking probiotics to replenish the good bacteria while I was taking the Flagyl. Haven't had a problem since.

Acidophilus is a good vitamin/supplement to take for vaginal health! You can find it at GNC, and probably Wal Mart and places like that as well.

Yes you can find them at any retail pharmacy, Walmart, or health food store like Sun Harvest or Whole Foods. I actually buy mine online from iherb.com. They're called Femdophilus and they were made specifically to maintain vaginal health.
