Hi there.
I'm on NuvaRing, and I've been using it since August 2007.

The doctor has me on a schedule where I put the ring in on a Thursday, go 24 days (or something like that), and take the ring out on Sunday.
I usually get my period on Thursday...I usually get to insert the new ring followed by a tampon. (sorry if that's TMI!) My period then lasts around 3 days or so. It's been pretty consistant the entire time I've used the ring.

Anyway, the last couple months (like, maybe the last three...) I've been forgetting my ring!
I'm supposed to take the ring out at 10:00 AM, but I've been forgetting it. One time I forgot until around 3:00 PM that day.
I was supposed to take my latest ring out this last Sunday (the 13th), but I completely forgot about it until Monday. I took it out around 3:00 or so on Monday.
Today was the day the new ring was supposed to go in, and I didn't get out of bed to put it in until 12:00. (Noon)

I'm fairly certain I don't have to worry about my protection...logically, at least, it seems to me that I shouldn't be protected any less if I'm keeping the ring in LONGER than normal.

I'm just wondering...what should I expect from this?
I haven't gotten any sign of my period yet today.
My period doesn't ALWAYS fall on Thursday, sometimes it falls on Wednesday or Friday, so I'm not worried yet...but I am wondering if my period might come later because I left my ring in an extra day?

I looked in the vulvapedia, but there's nothing about specific HBC, which makes sense.
Anybody have experience with NuvaRing who have forgotten to take the ring out on time?

Thanks for any help!!

shouldn't matter. i took mine out somewhere inbetween the 3-4 week mark; as long as you put a new one in before 5 weeks (whether you have your period week or not), you're fine. unlike the pill, time of day doesn't matter :)

AFAIK nuva ring can provide full protection for four weeks and longer of insertion, so your "period" will likely be delayed as long as you forgot to take it out.

But no, you shouldn't be worried.

I always set an alarm on my phone for insertion/removal.

So long as you do not extend the time your NuvaRing is in past four weeks, and/or extend the time it is out more than seven days, you are protected. If you were leaving your NuvaRing in for JUST 21 days, waiting exactly a week, and putting it back in, the time of day would matter (you would want to insert and take out around the same time). But since that isn't the case, you're alright.

Since you left it in a day longer than usual, that can definitely affect when your withdrawal bleed will occur. When on NuvaRing my withdrawal bleed started about two days after I took it out, regardless of how long it had been in.

To help me remember my NuvaRing, I set an event on my cell phone calendar, and told the phone to remind me of the event five minutes before it occurred... I did it for two months in advance. That way, I didn't need to make myself remember, the phone would do it for me!

suggestion...if you're on the computer often enough, download this. it'll save you this concern in the future. :)

I'm confused -- I thought you were supposed to change your NuvaRing out every week?

Maybe it's just late and I'm totally off the mark here, lol.

No. The NuvaRing is monthly. The Ortho Evra Patch is changed weekly for 3 weeks in a row.

Not to mention the Patch is EVIL. *ptooey*

Sorry but I really hate the patch; it made me crazy depressed and now I can't use HBC at all!

It's certainly not evil for everyone. Sorry you had a bad experience on the Patch; mine was great. For some people it works out fabulously.

Oh I know. I am just biased against it; it is like how sometimes really low dose pills have WAY worse side effects than high dose HBC methods for some people. :(

I am glad it worked for you; it took a year for things to go awry but when they did, they went really wrong. I have a copper IUD now.

i've been on the nuvaring since september of 2005. I do the take out/put in thing based on dates.... i take it out on the 3rd and put it in on the 9th... i've never paid attention to times... its just when I remember. and my period always comes on the 7th or 8th.
but to answer your question, since you left it in an extra day, it'll probably come a day later then usual. really, time doesn't matter. hope it comes though!

If you're concerned about it, try setting an alarm on your cell phone/computer/etc. I'm REALLY bad at keep track of my periods [I know the length of my cycle, I always just forget what day it had started on unless it is something significant like my bday], so when it starts, I figure out when it should be for the next month and program it into my phone. That way, there aren't usually any surprises. I'll also do the alarm trick if I go to bed with a tampon in and don't want to sleep too long. I'm TERRIFIED of tss.
good luck!
