I'm on HBC, the pill, and I take it regularly; I haven't been more than 30 minutes late in the last 5 weeks. Today I was standing at work, I go a twinge in my lower right half, a bit in from my hip bone... It felt a lot like ovulation pain, mittleschmertz, which I used to get all the time. Is it possible I just ovulated, even though I'm on BC? If so, does that mean I'm not protected from pregnancy?

ETA I had 3 cysts on my ovary as of August of 2005, but I asked my gyno about them in May of 2007, and she said that she couldn't feel them, so I didn't have them. I've been consistently on BC since then, so ideally I haven't ovulated and gotten more...?

Aside from stopping ovulation, HBC also makes the uterus an unfriendly place to sperm, and to fertilized blastocysts -- the uterine lining is thin, and, IIRC, cervical mucus is un-conducive to letting the little wigglers get in. (And only sex prior to this might have much chance of anything.) Use backup for 24 hours after you felt the twinge for extra security, I'd say; even if you did ovulate, the egg would break down after that.

I fear I don't know about cyst growth. O:(

If you have had sex within the last week before this, for your peace of mind, you might want to pick up a pregnancy test if your next "period" (pill-withdrawal bleeding) isn't reasonably heavy. Depends on your personal stress levels regarding that.
