so, I have been getting quite fed up with all of the Hormonal birth control methods I've tried. I can't take the pill for full pregnancy protection because I have GERD and am almost constantly on antibiotics because of an immune defiency, the ring is far too expensive for me monthy plus I could never quite get it to feel comfortable, and with all of my mental health issues going back on depo is just a horrible idea. I am only 19, and all that I have heard about IUD's most doctors won't put one in unless you've had a child before and that isn't the case with me. plus, I am not sure my insurance would cover it. I don't know much about implant, but it's probably not something my insurance would cover either. basically, I am hoping you ladies will know of something else I can try for birth control, whether it be more info on IUDS & implants or anything really! I am beyond frustrated! I'm not currently sexually active, but hopefully I will be again soon, and I'm not sure I want to just trust condoms. thanks for any help!

For what it's worth, many health care professionals are happy to insert an IUD in nulliparous women. Some of the previous concerns regarding insertion in nulliparous women have proven to be much less significant than originally thought, and there are many people here on VP who have an IUD and no children.

Perhaps the folks at [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas might be able to help suggest some providers in your area who are open to IUD insertion for you?

If you are concerned about side effects on Depo, I do not know if an implant would necessarily be the best choice for you. Implanon is a progestin-only long-term method just like Depo. Although I'm not familiar with its exact incidence of side effects, the similar profiles mean that it may not suit your needs at this time.

I know someone in this community who has mentioned in a comment in another post that she was able to get an IUD for free, and she's young too.

It may be difficult to find a provider who would consider IUDs or implanon for you, but it shouldn't be impossible. I'll also offer hope for the insurance bit - if you can't take pills/ring/etc due to medical concerns your health care provider should be able to write a letter stating such, so that your insurance could reconsider their decision to not cover the device/insertion. This is a common practice, and is generally easy enough to do.

Why would it be hard to find someone to provide her with Implanon? It has no stipulations or requirements that sometimes come along with an IUD.

no, different problems entirely with implanon - to insert it, a provider needs special training, and there aren't many providers who've had the training, so it can be hard to find someone to actually physically put it in.

I guess I didn't think about that, considering my doctor was trained and offering the implant before I had ever even heard about it.

In my city, the first person to become trained in Implanon insertions was able to advertise as such in September 2007. To date, she is still the only Implanon-trained provider in town. :)

Try planned parenthood. They inserted my IUD with no questions or hesitance (I'm 21 and have never been pregnant or had children). Also, planned parenthood seems to be a cheaper alternative, depending on the area.

Also, the arch foundation (linked above) helps with Paragard. Also, on the Paragard website, they have a payment plan option to help it be more affordable.

I can't recommend my IUD enough though. It's amazing.

I wouldn't recommend her your own IUD. Would you really want to give it up?! ;)

Yup, I got my IUD for FREE! at planned parenthood at the ripe old age of 21. :)

(not all planned parenthoods have the same funding...so it's not necessarily possible for you to get yours for free too. But it's worth looking into! And planned parenthood does seem to be good about giving them to young folk)

I was able to get my IUD at 18, no pregnancies, not married. I had to pay for it out-of-pocket, because my insurance company is stupid, but in the long run the IUD is the cheapest option; it's paid off and I'm set for another 9 years or more. My gyno agreed to it with basically no hesitation, so that was pretty cool. There are plenty of doctors out there who do it, and I am told that people have good experiences at Planned Parenthood and places like it. There's also a pretty big list in the memories over at [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas of IUD-friendly gynos. It may take some searching but it can definitely be done. Good luck.

I got my IUD when I was 17 and I have never been pregnant. My insurance paid for it all except like $60. I LOVE my IUD though! I have a Mirena. It is the greatest thing ever.

Just out of curiosity, what's the problem with having GERD and the Pill?
