Ok, so the subject line sums it up. I may have always had this, but I guess its been on my mind more in the past six months. During my cycle, for about a day or two I will have sporadic rectal pain. Sometimes accompanying cramps. Sometimes its a dull pain and other times its can be really intense, but they only last several seconds.

Are these oddly placed cramps? I'm wondering if other women go through this and if this is something I should be concerned about.

I too occasionally have the same problem but I also have IBS so I've always attributed it to that.

We actually have this question come up with quite a bit of regularity here on VP. Turns out lots of us (I'd venture to say most women, but that's just a guess based on some of the responses here!) get sharp, shooting cramps in their rectal or perineal area during their period.

I know I've had those all of my life! It's perfectly normal. :)

No worries, I think the most recent one was about a week ago, so that makes it... a million pages back in VP. ;) Just wanted you to know that you are by no means alone!

I have those sharp types of pains. mostly during my period, but Ive had them sometimes when Im not on my period. I thought it was always related to my period, but then I thought maybe its a regularity problem because I have always had a bowel movement like every 3 days. and sometimes its a hard consistency. now I drink fiber drinks and eat quite a bit more fiber and thats helped. I hardly even have them during my period or when Im not on it.

my mom always told me that those pains are a sign you're dehydrated, but I don't know if that's true or not...

Oh boy do I get them. The sort that stops you in your tracks, and takes your breath away for a few seconds while you try to make the pain go away. Ouch.

i get them as well. I have a lovely retroverted uterus, which can cause cramps to be worst in the back/bum region. something like 25% of women have them, it's not a problem, cause for concern or anything. My doctor described it as 'it's like being left handed'. but yeah, that can cause such cramps.
