I've been told that girls who live under the same household can sometimes have their periods at the same time. Here's my problem: my little 11-year-old sister started hers just last month and it lasted two days, and she didn't get it this month. Typical first periods, but I think that because of her weird imbalance, that it messed up my cycle. As of right now, according to MyCycle, I'm two days late. Is she the cause of this?

And--no, I have not had sex [ever =P] so pregnancy isn't a possibility.

Any other ideas?

i don't know if this is any help - but i live with 5 other girls. i totally skipped over my PMS week and started my period early, and on the same day as one girl i live with who's on HBC! so it's definitely possible.

My body has attached itself to my sister-in-law and it drives me up the wall. That month she got her period twice in 30 days? Hey, me, too! Oh, she's two weeks early? Look at that, so am I. Oh, she's two weeks late and didn't think to tell me this so I wouldn't be freaking out? Yep.

well, when i lived with my cousin she would use her birth control to "skip periods" and everytime she did, she screwed up my cycle, too. so i think it's definitely a possibility that your little sister's cycle is affecting yours!

While my period seems to be trucking away as usual (it rarely syncs up with anyone's--I blame living with my dad for my entire life), I do know that the cycle can be very zany. You could have easily synced up with her, especially since she's your younger sister.

In my final year of high school my period came at pretty much the same time as all my friends'. Then the year got more hectic, we had our exams and then holidays started and, as we saw less of each other, our periods went back to doing their own thing.

Two days is not late, two days is normal fluctuation. It's actually pretty rare for women to get their periods every 28 days on the dot (apart from anything else, the average is actually 29), it's just that we're used to that being the norm because that's when withdrawal bleeds are set on the combined pill. My periods average 27 days and can be anything from 20 to 34, though they're usually closer than that.

And yes, women living together can experience menstrual synchrony. There was a pregnancy scare in my first month of living in student accommodation because of that.

When I lived at home with my mum and two sisters we all had our periods at the same time - i was the only one on birth control and they just fell in with my cycle. it was good for them as we all have pretty irrgular and heavy periods so it saved them from going on birth control too!
