Hello!

I'd posted here a few times before asking about Nexplanon and preparing for it and well, I finally got it! I thought I'd share my experience with it as I haven't seen too many posts in relation to it.

Insertion )

Healing and side effects )

All in all, I'm really happy with it so far. It's great to not have to worry about taking a pill every day and worrying about prescriptions and paying for those every month. I was really lucky and my insurance covered 100% of it, insertion included. I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for something more long term.

Thanks for reading!

Ok so my computer for some strange reason isnt letting me look through the links you fine people have provided, so I am asking my questions here.

I am 30...yep.  I am engaged to be married to a wonderful man whom I have been with for 7 years.  We use my hormonal birthcontrol pill as our only protection.  It is alesse 28 (also known as aviane/lutera).  I have been on this pill for 15 years. Never have had an issue, and we are both std free ect.

I may have had a chemical type pregnancy in my teens, but nothing else, and am a SA survivior.

My questions are as follows:

first of all-- My hubby-to-be and I dont want children.  Not for us. We have dogs :)... so:

1.  I want mirena.  Having never had kids, is it even possible?
2. about mirena, any advice on how to get it? Planned parenthood? trying to get my doc to agree?
3. Implanon- good? bad? ugly?

I am allergic to nickle, so no copper IUD, and no one is going to implant essure without me having kids, so I am looking for long term options that someone will give me!!

Thanks!!

*ETA changed my intro to be more appropriate, and to add that I never intended to offend, I honestly didnt even really think about it, but you all are right, and I need to be more careful!

I got Implanon today and because the tag didn't have much information about it, I thought I would post a brief recount of my experience. If I'm allowed, I'll edit this post later on with new information as it becomes available to me (such as side effects). Otherwise, I'll just add new posts if it seems that there is an interest.

The whole procedure took about thirty minutes from the time I stepped into the exam room to the time I walked out the door. I signed two consent forms and then the process pretty much started rolling.

The nurse practitioner and the other nurse who helped her verified that the Implanon was in the needle. Groovy. This is done every time.

My arm was numbed, and this was the "worst" part. Everyone agrees that this is the worst part and the nurse practitioner doing the insertion said that the previous girls really hated the burning sensation and that some cried - but it was pretty much pain-free in my opinion. I would not have even mentioned the VERY slight burning sensation, which lasted about six seconds, if they didn't ask about it. Gardasil felt way worse to me, and even that was completely bearable. My reaction was apparently a rare one, though. They said no one had handled it so well. For the "worst" part, it was easy.

I've had numerous body and facial piercings, and the needle used for Implanon is only a tiny bit larger than any of those needles (around 14g) were - or maybe it was the same, honestly. It might look very scary to those who haven't been pierced. I was curious about this, and she let me touch the numb place before using iodine to sterilize it again. I am very glad that she encouraged my curiosity.

She said "Big stick" and then inserted the needle. I could feel it moving inside of my arm, but it was painless. I felt it moving further in distinctly, watched her as well as I could when she was pushing a button to inject the device, and then felt it slide out. She pushed a piece of gauze to it and had me feel where the Implanon was.

I admit, I wasn't sure that I felt it so I just said that I did. I don't know why I couldn't feel it. Maybe I wasn't really sure what I was looking for or something.

She put a band-aid on it, wrapped my entire bicep in an ace bandage and told me to leave them on for a week and for a day respectively. Afterward she sent me on my way with a wallet card to remind me to get it changed in three years.

I feel a slight tightness when I lift my arm, but otherwise there isn't really any pain. I can definitely feel it now. I'm an over-sharer so I'm telling everyone. I'm also really excited that I had it done. I am not looking forward to the bleeding that apparently happens to many people in the beginning and if I have excessive bleeding, I hope to stick it out for a long time to let the side-effect pass because I will be really disappointed if this doesn't work for me!

Implants?

I saw only one tagged entry for Implanon...

I'm having a lot of trouble finding personal experiences of implanted contraceptives which kind of worries me.

Anyone out there have an implant story?

So I finally got my Implanon inserted yesterday after crossing my fingers all week that my period would show up when it's supposed to!!! I just thought I would let everyone know what it's actually like getting it done.

I had mine inserted in my Ob/gyn's office. My usual doctor was completely booked which meant I would have to wait untill next month so I had another female doctor in the office do it. When I arrived they did all the usual stuff, blood pressure, weight (I lost 12 pounds since last visit!!) etc. They didn't do a pregnancy test which was a bit shocking but I had one done recently and I guess since I'm on my period the risks of being PG are nill. I had to sign off on some paperwork that I understood the risks of the procedure and the possible side effects. They then made me lay back with my arm up over my head. The doc went over again the possible side effects/risks etc. She pointed out that the most common side effect was the irregular bleeding. I mentioned I had been on Depo and didn't have a period for 4 years to which she said "this will be a little different". I wasn't so happy with that comment since I of course knew that already and was hoping for some reassurance since this is a side effect I'm hoping I don't have.

They sterilized my arm and then injected a whooolllleee lot of Lidocaine in my arm to numb it up. This was honestly the worst part of the experience. The lidocaine pinches a bit when the needle goes in and then it burns for a second or two as the medicine goes in. After about 3 seconds I couldn't feel a thing. The doc then told me not to watch when she actually inserted the Implanon... the needle on the applicator thing is quite large so I was nervous. However I'm very glad to say I didn't feel a single thing. When she said it was in I was shocked because I didn't know she had even started!! She then made me feel it so I would know where it was and then bandaged my arm up. I was given aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment for one month just to make sure it hasn't migrated or anything.

I was a bit dizzy afterwards soI sat in my car for a few minutes before heading back to work. Things were a bit weird when the Lidocaine started to wear off because my whole arm started tingling, luckily I work in a doctors office so everyone assured me that was normal. I was worried it would start to hurt later on but it never did. I avoided sleeping on it last night and then took the bandage off this morning. It isn't really sore however I do have a pretty bruise!! Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I won't have any annoying side effects!! So far I would recommend it because the insertion really isn't bad at all!! My insurance paid for everything so I only had to pay my $40 copay!
