My Dearest Vulva-Loving Superstars,

As several of you have requested, your friendly neighborhood VP Team members are taking this opportunity to let you get to know us a little better. We will take turns posting our bios for your reading pleasure. :) Check out the tag for this entry to view them all.

Of course, we want to get to know you, too, so if you haven't already and you'd like to, feel free to introduce yourself here, as indicated on the profile page. (Note that you can also now add yourself to VP's Frappr map from the intro page.) If you made your introduction a while ago and your life has changed dramatically since then, reply to your old comment and update us!

Hi! I'm Melissa, but I'm known as Lissie around VP.

That's me up there!

On July 26, 1983, I became the fourth and final (human) member of an awesome family. I grew up in a mid-sized town in Upper East Tennessee with my mom, dad, sister, and plenty of pets. I had a great childhood full of lots of love and enough success to cushion the failures. I'm lucky enough to have a very supportive family. My mom is an RN and is the kind of mom who taught her daughters the names of all their body parts (not just the parts not covered by a bathing suit) and let them check out their vulvas in the mirror so they knew what each part looked like. My dad is an engineer and the most patient, supportive, and loving man I've ever met. My sister is now a special ed. teacher in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains.

After high school, I headed off to college. While majoring in English and history, I read tons of fabulous books (both for class and for fun), drank too much cheap vodka, and learned the value of challenging my beliefs and those of the people around me. I graduated in May 2005 and moved just up the road from my college town to start law school. I spent the past year learning everything you never wanted to know about the rules that govern your life. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with my law degree, but I've got two more years to figure it out!

Things I Like

Sports. I'm an avid sports fan. Football is my true love. I'm a life-long supporter of the University of Alabama - Roll Tide! Both my parents went to the U of A, and at least five generations of my father's family have lived and died in Alabama. I also watch a lot of basketball and a bit of hockey. During a hockey game last season, I took an errant slap-shot to the forehead. Being a spectator is dangerous! I had a fun ER trip and about six weeks of unattractive (and painful!) facial bruising, but there was no lasting damage.

Flute. I played the flute from middle school through college. I marched in a huge band in high school and I loved it. One-third of the student body was part of the band! Lately, my flute has been a bit lonely, but hopefully one day I will once again study formally.

Guilty pleasures. There are so many! I have bad taste in television. Seriously. I love cheesy reality t.v. Right now, I am completely addicted to So You Think You Can Dance and I've been a faithful Laguna Beach viewer for two years. I also like to dance around my apartment to Britney Spears songs. Life's too short to worry about being sophisticated all the time. I get enough seriousness from law school!

Good sex education. I was lucky enough to grow up in a school system that had a fabulous and informative sex ed. program. I think every person deserves to have access accurate information about his/her body. That's why I love VP!

Kids. I've spent the past eleven years working with kids in a variety of capacities. Right now, I'm young, single, childless and happy about it, but someday I'd like to get married and raise a few kiddos of my own.

Things I Don't Like

Airplanes. I've only flown a couple of times, and while I love the view from the sky, I hate flying. I have nightmares that someone is making me get on a plane. I love road trips and I love traveling, but there has to be a really good reason for me to get on a plane.

Spiders. A couple of years ago, I found a black widow hanging out in one of my sweaters. I've never quite recovered. One of the down sides of living in my own apartment is having to take care of all the spider issues. They seem to appear out of thin air!

Murky water. I love the water. Swimming has always felt very natural to me, but I get really paranoid if I can't see what is happening in the water around me.

Things that go BUMP in the night. I love living alone, but sometimes it sucks when you hear a noise outside and there is nobody around to help investigate. I blame my fear on reading Patricia Cornwell books when I was ten. She writes some scary stuff.

Politics. I really don't think that anyone clever enough to get elected is honest enough to be trusted. Unfortunately, you can't escape politics, so I try to be educated enough to cast a vote in big elections, but I don't have much faith in the system.

So... that's me - at least the part that can translate to paper. I'm looking forward to continuing the vulva revolution with you!
