I've recently started taking a multi-vitamin, and I am considering getting B12 shots. The one question I have is will this have any affect on my BC? The multi vitamin is a general vitamin its the brand one-a-day.

Thanks for any advice.

i have done b12 shots off an on and it has never affected my BCP.
my GP told me that you cant give yourself too much b12 as you will pee it out.... its very good for energy and it works better then the pills.

B-vitamins are good to take if you're on birth control! HBC can apparently aggravate any B-complex deficiencies. (http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/birth-control-000200.htm)

There's no need to use b12 in shot form unless you cannot absorb it orally (due to lacking intrinsic factor in the gut - pernicious anaemia for example). Drops, sublinguals (that melt under the tongue) and pills are the easiest way to get extra b12.

If you're a reasonably healthy adult you'll almost certainly be getting the recommended daily allowance from food, as you only need 2.4mcg daily. A lot of multivitamins contain added b12 anyway.

Also, if you decide to go down the route of having b12 injections you'll need to be prescribed b9, folate, in high enough doses for it to bind to. Although again, unless you're suffering a clinical case of malabsorption, you should be getting sufficient b9 and b12 from your diet.

although B12 is promoted as a general cure-all, it's pretty much just quackery. Cyanocobalamin (b12)ampoules for injection are typically 300mcg. Your body can only make use of about 3mcg max per day, anything else is excreted. Except in those with clinical b12 deficiency, the shots will just give you expensive, b12-loaded urine! The oral forms are cheaper, and designed specifically for 'normal' adults to use as dietary supplements.

Ive had a deficiency and I'm working on improving it. I feel loads better and low B12 can make you a pretty terrible person mood wise.

I'm not anemic, but I think I'm just a poor absorber and that article that HBC affects B vitamin levels is intereting. It makes sense. Your body stores years worth of B12 at a time and you cannot overdose on it, as it was previously posted.

I get shots once a month and take a 1200mcg pill a day. I plan on getting another blood test in the summer after being on shots/pills for a year. So maybe continue with your shots/pills and get another blood test in a few months.
