vaginapagina | Restarting the pill after dropping a month: problems, risks? (Reply)

Hello, I'm posting on behalf of my sister:

Sister:
I'm on the pill, and while I was away from my boyfriend this summer I took a month off from it (which my gynecologist later informed me wasn't a good idea. Oops). Because I'm going to see him again in a little over a month, I'd like to start taking it again next week, which would technically have given me the necessary 28 days to have a period. However, I have a terribly irregular cycle (I originally went on the pill for amenorrhea) and my period hasn't come yet. If I don't have a period before next Monday, is it still okay for me to start up a new pack? I may end up skipping a period, but I know that many people do this on purpose. Will it throw my cycle way off if I use the pill in this way? Would I be putting myself at any sort of risk?
