STREP.

i just got a call from my doctor with pap results i had done last week. they said i have a yeast infection (not having any symptoms) and that i have strep. what IS strep? i'm being given some antibiotics and two doses of diflucan. anyone have any info on the infection and how the hell i got it, etc? thanks.

ohhhh, just my "i hate antibiotics" warning -- make sure you replentish your body with good flora. antibiotics have a tendency to kill off most of the bacteria that is healthy for your body. take some acidophalous to reintroduce it to your body!

i don't usually take antibiotics and i don't really care what they do, as long as they kill the infection.

i'm just looking for information regarding the infection.

yes, and i can only find things on strep throat. not the vaginal infection type that i have.

Strep is a bacteria. Strep in general is a gram positive bacteria that colonizes the oral cavity and in about 25% of women, colonizes the vagina. Colonization is not in itself dangerous, and if you're showing no signs of active infection, I don't understand why they're treating it. Most of the time they only treat women about to give birth so as to avoid giving the baby meningitis.

What antibiotics are they using? The drug of choice for strep (group B in the vagina) is penicillin. It's good they gave you diflucan as well, because the antibiotics could have made the yeast infection worse...

they prescribed amoxicillin. when i got my very first pap done a few years ago, they told me i had a strep infection then too. it wasn't mentioned during any other pap smears that i've had, and i've had quite a few, until now. it wasn't treated then, and i don't know why they're treating it now. the only thing i'm experiencing is pain from a cyst i have. no yeast symptoms or anything out of the norm except what's related to my cyst. so it's a bit weird. thank you for the info though. <3.

amoxocillin is practically the same thing as penicillin, so that's fine. If you do get a chance, ask why they're treating it, and if it is indeed Strep B. It's just odd, and this kind of thing builds resistant bugs. Glad nothing is majorly wrong though.

i've been taking this same antibiotic so often since i was a kid, it's kind of strange. no wonder i'm sick all the time, i've built up such a resistance. i'm not understanding why it's being treated now; perhaps because i'm moving and wont have a doctor any longer once that happens, so they wanted to treat things before i left? who knows. thanks for all your info though, it really helped. xo

Do you have a sore throat and did you have a throat swab? If so, that would be strep throat. If the strep result came from the pap, you probably have some type of vaginal/cervical strep infection. Some kinds of streptococcus bacteria can be found in your vagina, naturally, along with other bacteria and yeast, but the pap probably showed an imbalance of some sort. It sounds like you have lots of yeasties and lots of strep, hence the diflucan and antibiotics. You could call your doctor's office back and ask for more information.

Ok, just a dumb little thought but this seems a little counter productive. Give you Diflucan to get rid of the yeasties but then antibiotics. Don't they usually cause yeast infections? Huh, what do I know. Good luck and happy vagina to you.

they gave me two doses of diflucan- one to take now, and one to take when i finish my antibiotics incase it gave me another yeastie. thanks.

Some women have strep in their vagina. It isn't a bad thing.

It just means that when you have babies and are in labor, you'll be put on antibiotics to keep your baby from getting it.
