Effects of lubricants on fertility/sperm motility

Hi!

So Because Of Reasons I just ended up doing a quick bit of research on how much we know about the effects of lubricants on sperm and therefore on trying to conceive. All links go to paywalled articles, but I'm pulling the info from the publically-viewable abstracts (can read in more depth if anyone's keen for me to do so).

A 1998 in vitro study found that all the forms of lube they tested had a negative effect on sperm motility. In 2011 an in vitro comparison of "nonspermicidal" lubricants found that Felis, Replens, and Aquasonic Gel had negative effects on sperm, but Pre-Seed (... what a terrible name) was fine. In April we've got another in vitro study comparing a wider range of lubricants (modified human tubal fluid (mHTF) control and in 10% Pre-Seed, Astroglide, and KY products (Sensitive, Warming, and Tingling) and baby, canola, sesame, and mustard oils), again finding that of the commercially-produced lubricants Pre-Seed and baby oil were the least bad for sperm, with mustard oil having an... interesting effect. Yet Another In Vitro Study (March 2014, comparing Sylk, Conceive Plus, glycerol (!!!), Johnson's Baby Oil, SAGE Culture Oil, Yes, Forelife, MaybeBaby and Pre-Seed) found again that Pre-Seed was best for vitality and Forelife was worst; Pre-Seed was best for motility and Sylk the worst; and none of these lubricants had any impact on DNA integrity; Conceive Plus was apparently the second-best lube for sperm function.

However, in contrast to in vitro studies, a longitudinal in vivo cohort study published in June (i.e. tracking how long it took actual humans using each type of lube to conceive versus humans not using additional lubricants, as opposed to - coarsely - dumping sperm in a warmed petri dish full of lube and videoing them) showed no effect of lubricant choice & use on ability to conceive.

The authors of that last study understandably call for a randomised controlled trial; in the meantime - and I am not a doctor! - I'd suggest that there's little benefit to avoiding lubricant or buying more expensive lubes (the longitudinal cohort study of actual patients showed no effect), but if you do want to minimise that risk consensus seems to be that Pre-Seed (I am still not over the name) is the way to go.

Lube recommendations?

Hi, Superstars!

The BF and I are on the hunt for a new brand of lube. We've previously had problems with glycerin-containing lubes, as well as coconut oil, so we are looking for a non-coconut oil, non-glycerin-containing, relatively affordable brand of lube.

We generally don't use condoms, so we don't have to worry about products that can break them down. Flavored and non-flavored lubes are both fine.

If you have any recommendations for sample packs, we'll take those as well! I browsed through the lube tag, but most of the links (especially to sample packs) are dead since the posts are years old, and there are probably some great new brands/products out now anyway.

Thanks in advance!

MMMMonday: Let's Talk about Lube

Each Monday, we bring you special, maintainer-curated content intended to enrich your VP experience. Please note that you can find past MMMMonday posts using the mmmmonday tag.

Also, a quick reminder about the other places you can find VP: vp_bulletins for local announcements; contact_vp for questions and feedback on the way VP is run; the Vulvapedia for basic questions; and don't forget about our sibling community over on Dreamwidth!

VP maintainer [livejournal.com profile] mangofandango brought this review of Pink and Gun Oil brand sex lubes to the rest of the maintainer team's attention.

In it, dizzygirl, the author, notes that both lines are produced by the same manufacturer. Additionally, the formula for Pink Silicone is basically identical to the formula for Gun Oil Silicone -- as the formula for Pink Water matches the formula for Gun Oil H2O. Essentially, there's a masculine-marketed and a feminine-marketed version of each lube.

What's more: For any comparable sizes, the Gun Oil version has a cheaper per ounce price than does its Pink equivalent. Even beyond that, Empowered Products (the makers of both lines of lube) offer Gun Oil in a far greater range of sizes than it offers either Pink. That is, you can buy a quart (32 oz.) of the "boy lube" if you're so inclined; if it's the "girl lube" you're after, the largest size tops out at just under a cup (6.7 oz.). That's better than a fourfold difference.

Ever the extrapolaters, we're very interested in what this suggests about the manufacturer's -- and maybe greater society's -- assumptions are about gender, genitals, sexual activity, and lube. Why the size discrepancy? Why the price discrepancy? (And as an avid Pink -- water and silicone -- user for years, what does it say about me that I never noticed this until someone pointed it out to me? :P)

Also, feel free to share with us your favorite recommendations for lube!

Question about lube...

So, Amazon is having a serious sale on System JO lubricants and my bf wants to pick some up. He told me to do research on it, so I immediately thought of asking you wonderful VPers.
Has anyone had any experience with this brand?
Would you recommend it?

does anyone bring their own lube to the gyno?

I think I have BV (again), and I realized that I started feeling "off" ever since my last pap. In fact, I always seem to get a YI or something after I've been to the gyno, and it's probably whatever they put on the speculum. I never use lube in my personal life (other than my boyfriend's spit), because it gives me problems, but back in the day I had a bottle of organic lube that was made with aloe and grapeseed oil (or grapefruit seed extract; I always get them confused), and that didn't seem to affect my crotch.

Is it normal to be so sensitive? Has anyone else ever brought their own stuff for an exam?

Mineral oil experiment, your favorite lubes, and "toys"

Hullo VP'ers! I've been browsing through for the past couple days, and decided to ask y'all a few questions for my first post:

1. Mineral oil for lubrication during masturbation: We have a big ol' bottle around for rashes and dry skin (it's a dry cold where I live), and I got the bright idea of trying some as extra lubrication next time I decide to masturbate. My "toy" (see #3) is plastic, and I'm well aware that oils + condoms = bad, so no problems there. I had heard that it may cause YI's for gals who are prone to them, but I've never ever had one. Would it be safe-ish to try once or twice (or thrice), or would I be better off going "au naturale" as before, until I can buy a bottle of proper lube? I do plan on using the mineral oil both on my vulva/labia and vaginally.

2. Your favorite brands: the little pharmacy at my uni has a magnificent selection of lubes and condoms, so I thought I'd pick up a bottle or two to play around with, and I wanted to ask you guys: what's your favorite brand/type of lube, and why?

3. Makeshift "toys": I don't actually own a real vibrator; I have an electric toothbrush (bristle head removed!) that works surprisingly well. I know of at least one other person who uses one for the same purpose, and I was wondering if anyone else here has found such creative uses for everyday objects.

OCM and lube.

For those of you with semi-oily skin using the oil cleansing method but find ev oilive oil too gooey, I highly recommend Grape Seed Oil.

It makes a great silicone like natural lube for sex/dryness, too. (NOT to be used with latex products. It is still an oil.)

Looking For Lube

I'm looking for a lube that A) does what it's supposed to do (lubricate of course), B) doesn't dry sticky, C) doesn't leave a bitter taste (doesn't have to be flavoured, just not nasty tasting), and D) doesn't stain blankets. So far the only kind I've found that I like is Wet Platinum, but I can only find sample sizes. So, do any of you have suggestions on a good lube?

Also, what is your favourite kind and why?

Stining Lube?

I find I have problems with lube stinging my Labia when I use it...

Right now I use O'My Lubricant... I love it because of how it smells and feels. I've also used "Wet" and KY and they all seem to do the same thing...

Is this me, or is there an alternate lubricant that I can find to prevent the stinging?

Silicone Lube?

Ok, this may sound like a really dumb question but since silicone lube doesn't remove with just water how do you get it off (?) the inside of your vagina?  Does it naturally clean out or do you have to use soap inside?

anal lube

Hi everyone! So my boyfriend and I are considering anal sex. We've tried it before, but due to improper lube/nervousness/general unease with the whole thing, it didn't work out quite as well as planned.

So this time we are coming fully prepared! A box of condoms and a ton o' lube! Fun for everyone, I'm sure. >.>

So my boyfriend left the lube buying to me. I got KY Touch massage 2 in 1 warming gel because I figure, if the anal doesn't work out, we can use it for massages. Have any of you had experience using this type of lube before? It's fragrance free (for a content cooter) and condom compatible (because he's not sticking it up there without a rubber). I know we should use about a metric ton of it, but I just haven't had any experience with it.

I'm babbling, so...any input would be awesome! Thanks!

Warming lube

So, for curiosity's sake, does anyone actually like warming lube? KY or whatever other brand. Every time I see it mentioned here, it's bad. I don't like either, it burns. But they make the stuff, it has to be succesful somewhere... Who likes it?

Sorry if this has been discussed before! Delete if necessary.

Glycerin-free lube

Does anybody have a favorite glycerin-free water-based lube that's thick enough for anal play?

By that turn, does anybody have a LEAST FAVORITE glycerin-free water based lube that's thick enough for anal play?

My boyfriend is into recieving, and I get yeast infections when I'm downwind of glycerin. One all-purpose lube is also a lot easier to manage than having a drawer full of lubes that are only compatable with some orifices/toys.

Thanks a bunch!

silicone-based lubricant and diaphragms

Hey all. Comments to a post a few days ago recommended against using silicone-based lubricant with different items such as the NuvaRing, and diaphragms were included in that list. I looked online but haven't found any references to this; nowhere does it say that the silicone will react with a diaphragm to chemically decompose it. Does anyone have any good sources as to if they shouldn't be combined? I'm about 90% sure that I used them together a few months ago, and since I haven't been having sex since then, I'm not worried about being pregnant, but I'd like to know if I need a new diaphragm. Thanks!

sex after YI treatment and specific lubes

I just finished treating a mild YI and am ready to jump back into the saddle, just in time for my birthday. However, I am still a little dryer than usual and since we don't use condoms I think lube would be a good idea. The FAQ had this to say about the issue:

Some people argue that yeast infections can in fact be caused or made worse by insufficiently lubricated sexual intercourse; as a general rule, it is always a good idea to stick to water-based lubricants that are specifically designed for sex (source).

What about silicone-based lubricants? I'm not much of a lube fan myself because I find them sticky and a bit messy, but I definitley prefer silicone lubes to anything else I've tried. Is there a reason that the FAQ specifically suggest water-based lubes?

Suvery: Lube for Sex?

So. A recent VP post got me thinking about the proportion of women who use bottled lube -- like Liquid Silk, for example -- during penetrative sex versus the proportion of women who rely solely on their natural lubrication for sexual activities.

I definitely think both are fine; the only "right" is what works well for you and your body. And I'm sure there are folks who have fanfuckingtastic lubeless sex, just as I'm sure that there are women who require additional lube for sex to be a comfortable and fanfuckingtastic experience. What I'm not sure about, however, is how many people are at which points on the spectrum.

So, after a quick discussion with the rest of the VP Team, I decided that I'd like to get some feedback from VPers.

My questions are as follows:
1) How often do you use bottled/store-bought lube during sexual activities, and how often do you rely on your body's natural lubrication?

2) For whatever type of lubrication you use, how often do you feel "wet enough" for sex? How often is sex dry, painful, or otherwise uncomfortable?

3) For times when you don't use artificial lube, do you do anything "special" (extended foreplay, for example) to ensure that you're sufficiently wet?
I'm interested in knowing about the full range of situations, so any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Silicone-based lubes unsafe to use with Nuvaring?

Hi all,

I apologize if this has been discussed in the past, but I thought it was important enough to warrant a new discussion. I just saw in another post a brief discussion of whether or not it is ok to use silicone-based lubricants with the Nuvaring. Someone said that it's definitely not ok because the silicone can coat the ring and prevent it from working properly. Has anyone else heard this? I'm very concerned because I have never come across this before and I have read up like crazy on the ring! Also, I volunteer for a sexual health education group and we distribute free little lube packets (water-based AND silicone) and I want to make sure I'm counseling people correctly as to when the silicone is safe to use! Thanks for your help!

lube?

ah help. ok, me and my boyfriend decided to try the KY warming gel or whatever and the first time we tried it, it BURNED like my vagina was on fire or something. is that normal? i mean, yeah it was warming but it was BURNINGGG like no other. so we went to walmart to get something else, and so we decided to get this KY(i think) spray lube stuff, idk something silk spray. and when we tried that too it burned to no end. this time, i didnt make him stop & just fed up with the pain & after about 5minutes the pain started to go away. am i just allergic to the KY products or what?
also, we had this original lube, nothing special, and thats what we had first started using when we first started having sex.

well, i was noticing after he put it on the condom or whatever, his hand would get all red & look like a rash, and so did his "area". i came to the conclusion that he's allergic to that kind.

and now we are kind of at a..well we have a bit of a problem
does anyone know some sensitive lubes? as im thinking im either allergic to KY products, or im becoming more sensitive.
something that he might not be allergic too and something that wont irritate me?

its so irritating when we are trying to have sex and we have these kind of problems now..
