premenopausal menorrhagia?

Hi ladies!

My mom has been bleeding for two months now. Her primary doctor told her it could be because she's premenopausal (she's 49), but that was about a month ago. Around this time last year, she missed three months of having her period, but then started bleeding heavily without very long breaks in July (probably due to stress -- my dad was going through chemo and he died in early August). She called her doctor's office today, but the gyno was out, so she'll have to wait until tomorrow. She ate spinach this morning, and I'm going to get her an iron supplement in a bit...

Is there ANYTHING that she can do (or any natural supplements she could take) to lessen the bleeding until she sees her gyno? Last night she was bleeding like crazy and hardly got any sleep because of it.

thank you!

based on what ive heard from my coworkers and my mother, (who is 48 and in peri-menopause), it sounds fairly normal.

my co-worker started menopause when she was in early 40s, and couldnt leave the house because she bled so heavily.

i dont know what else she can really do before she goes to her doctor, but if she's really worried that she's bleeding TOO much, i'm sure a nurse line could reassure her or something.

hope she sleeps better tonight :)

no problem, she said it was really bad, but so happy when it was over (obviously right? haha)

i dont know how normal it is to bleed a lot, but i thought i'd let you know that its not so *uncommon*

My mom had a uterine ablation to lessen heavy menstrual periods. I don't know if what your mom is experiencing is normal... sometimes abnormal bleeding in a woman of that age can also be things like hyperplasia...endometrial cancer....etc. IDK. I hope things go well at the doctor! It's probably just crazy menopause hormones.

When eating spinach/anything non-meat iron rich, take it with vitamin C. That's about all I can offer though.

She can stay well hydrated, try NSAIDS (ibuprofen and the like) to try and lighten the bleeding. She can be sure to take a multi-vitamin, eat well. She should absolutely be keeping a menstrual calendar, but it sounds like she's on top of that.

If her doctor doesn't get back to her in the AM, she should call again. She needs to be seen for an endometrial biopsy and a pelvic sonogram, in short order.

Something similar happened to my mother at about the same age. She had long, heavy bleeding (though not that long, thank goodness, but she was anemic). She had a D&C, which helped for a little while. Now she takes Prometrium, which finally took care of it.

If she can take it, the first thing to try will probably be hormonal birth control. (My mother didn't want to use HBC because she had previously experienced visual disturbances when she took it, hence the Prometrium.)
