... under consideration for use in the US: nonsurgical permanent female sterilization, as opposed to tubal ligation. I'm interested in this becuase the older I get, the less I want to have children at all, so it is possible that at some point in the (not-immediate) future I'd consider this.

I SO want this. I have actually been looking at their homepage, but had not seen this article.
Unfortunately, to participate in the clinical trial, you have to have already had a child. Bah.

*sigh* not surprised.... i'm a little young to be doing anything permanent (i'm still 19), and I know it, but I wouldn't be surprised if 5 or 10 years down the road I wanted to. However, it seems there are plenty of docs who think there's something "wrong" with you if you're female and you *gasp* don't want children...
... that said, I guess it's unfair to assume that's the reason they restricted the clinical trials. There could be a reason they only want people who have given birth (easier insertion etc?)... I just didn't see one in perusing article, so I am suspicious.
