YI and antibiotics question.

Hey ladies,

I've been having an issue getting yeast infections because I'm taking antibiotics for my face. I get a YI a few days before my period starts and it's getting really annoying. I've just started taking acidophilus lately and it's helped a lot, I'm just wondering if there's a way to make them not happen at all while I'm taking my antibiotics? Also, when I get a yeast infection around the time of my period, can I treat it without it coming back during the same week if my hormones are still high?

Help!

Most YIs that seem to be "recurrent" actually aren't - instead it's likely one long YI that has less symptoms for a while, and then (due to hormonal fluctuation, periods, or some other factor) bounces back and is super-noticeable again.

Long-term oral abx use is a common cause of YIs, and its really kind of hard to treat when you're still exposing yourself to the abx. Acidophilus supplementation is great, I'd also recommend treating vaginally (Monistat-7 is the gold standard, you could also try yogurt, garlic, or boric acid as outlined in the YI wiki on the sidebar). Certainly it'll be important to wear cotton underwear, avoid moist clothing (swimsuits are a big one), avoid sexual contact while you're symptomatic and for at least a week after symptoms resolve.

And of course, if your symptoms don't resolve after treatment or if they change and don't seem YI-like, seeing a medical provider who can help you diagnose and treat what's going on is a great idea.

Feel better soon!

I would suggest against boric acid if you have any issues with dryness which can go along with yeast infections, as it is very drying. To give you an idea, it is often used to cure and dry hides to preserve them til they can be tanned.

I took antibiotics for my skin leading up to my wedding, and it was basically one long string of yeast infections after another. I'd get to the point where I couldn't stand it, take diflucan, get better for a while, get worse again, take more diflucan... The antibiotics really did help my acne, but they aren't a long-term solution for me. I still need to talk to my dermatologist about other options; frankly, it might come down to the same thing for you.
