i feel stupid...

so i just got put on Trinessa, which is a generic of ortho tri cyclen, last week and i start it this sunday.

It is the first time i will be on BC pills, so I really know absolutely nothing about what to expect.

have any of you ladies been on it? how did you like it? side effects? benefits?

also...this may be a stupid question...
will there be bad side effects if i smoked pot while on the pill, or am i just being paranoid?

i'm on ortho tri cyclen. don't feel any different. nope. feel exactly the same. i like how regular my periods are. my cramps aren't as bad. love it, love it.

and i never noticed any side effects while smoking pot. at the beginning of my senior year my best friend and i started to smoke a lot of pot like three to four times a day and i had just started the pill and nothing really happened. i just felt stupider, but that's a given. couldn't remember much at the present, now i can't remember much about that particular time in the past, etc.

I just started trinessa after first having been on OTC-lo (loved it, but got expensive) and then cyclessa (mood swings like whoa) and a two month break. So far, so good!

everyone experiences different side effects on different pills, many of which you can read about in post in this community, but a couple of the lesser discussed effects:

your period (most likely) will not start on the first of your placebo pills, but some where in 1-4 days after that.

if you haven't had condomless sex before and have it for the first time on the pill (you should be safe to do so after 7 days of on-time use of the pill, or one month if you are extra paranoid about these things) you should know that not all of the guy's ejaculate will stay inside of you and you will most likely leak when moving or getting up after sex. have some thing near by for the clean up (kleenex, towel, etc) or use a condom to keep the mess contained.

these are two "side effects" of going on the pill that I encountered that now one seems to mention.

I was on trinessa for a year and after my initial side effects wore off (a little breast tenderness/growth, thankfully the growth stayed, a bit moodier than usual) it was great. Then I started getting really sick the first few nights of a new pill pack, to the point of vomiting. After about 3 months of that, I ended up switching. But uh, before the puking, I was happy with it. :)

I'm only a casual pot smoker (once or twice a week) but to my knowledge there are no birth control side effects. The only thing that happens is that I get majorly horny and so I'm glad I'm on BC. :P

I was on Ortho-Tricyclen for a long time, and eventually had to stop because of intense mood swings. It really made me batshit.

You're not supposed to smoke (period, even cigarettes) when you're on birth control because of bloodclots. But assuming it's an occasional thing, other than the risk I don't think there are any side effects.

[identity profile] frolicnaked.livejournal.com 2007-05-23 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know there are contraindications for cigarette smoking because of the increased risk for blood clots and cardiovascular disease. For example, the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/reproductive-health/publications/mec/cocs.html) suggests that after the age of 35, the risks of cigarette smoking while on HBC generally outweigh the benefits. (For women under 35, the WHO says the benefits of being on HBC still generally outweigh the risks of combining it with cigarette smoking, though many health care professionals will recommend people stop smoking just for general health reasons.)

I'm not, however, aware of any authoritative recommendations about this for marijuana.

[identity profile] rumandtealeaves.livejournal.com 2007-05-24 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well there are no recommendations for marijuana because it's illegal, but it would obviously be the same (if not stronger, since you don't smoke marijuana through a filter the way most people do cigarettes, making it that much worse for you.)

[identity profile] frolicnaked.livejournal.com 2007-05-24 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, marijuana isn't illegal everywhere, so it's entirely possible that an international health organization might want to research and develop recommendations about it. Additionally, I don't think it's logically sound to assume that recommendations for cigarettes containing tobacco would necessarily be the same as recommendations regarding marijuana use would be. They're different substances containing different chemicals, with different ways of acting on the body. For example, nicotine is a stimulant while marijuana tends to act as a physical depressant.)

I'm not denying that both short and long term marijuana use can have their own problems -- like breathing complications (http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Cannabis_marijuana?OpenDocument), damage to the immune system (http://www.acde.org/common/Marijana.htm), and increased risk for cancers (http://www.drugabuse.gov/MarijBroch/teenpg9-10.html) -- I'm not seeing anything that suggests that such use increases one's risk of developing blood clots or cardiovascular disease, which would be the main risk in pairing it with hormonal birth control.

Eh, I'm on HBC and I smoke weed every now and then. Nothing weird has happened to me yet :D

As long as using pot doesn't make you forget to take your pill, you should be fine.

LOL.

:D

This is my second month on Trinessa. I took OTC-lo and Yaz before this.

So far, the only thing I've noticed is that I have to pee a lot more, but that might not be contributed to the medicine.
