VP Team Bios -
rockstarbob
My Dearest Vulva-Loving Superstars,
As several of you have requested, your friendly neighborhood VP Team members are taking this opportunity to let you get to know us a little better. We will take turns posting our bios about once a week. Check out the tag for this entry to view them all (mine is only the first one--lots more to go!).
Of course, we want to get to know you, too, so if you haven't already and you'd like to, feel free to introduce yourself here, as indicated on the profile page. (Note that you can also now add yourself to VP's Frappr map from the intro page.) If you made your introduction a while ago and your life has changed dramatically since then, reply to your old comment and update us!
Hi! I'm a girl named Bob. Well, OK. I'm not really named Bob, but a lot of people call me that. A while back we asked you what you wanted to know about us; I will do my best to incorporate your questions into my mini-bio here.
I'm a bisexual woman in my (very) late 20s who temporarily lives in the northeastern U.S. with my life partner. Aside from
vaginapagina, I also moderate
veganism and
academics_anon. I founded VP a long time ago now, way back in September of 2001. It was a one-woman show for a while, and I've been lucky enough to have several hand-picked and amazing collaborators over the years (see the current VP Team here). Something funny is that I broke the ice in the very first VP post with a question that seems to come up over and over again: euphemisms for vulvas and vaginas. It's hard to believe (but so so so awesome and exciting) that we're over 10,000 members strong now! I'm not kidding when I say that by being an active participant in VP, you (yes, you!) are taking part in a revolutionary and life-changing project.
More background: I grew up in rural central Illinois and when I left my sheltered small town and went away to college, I found out about feminism. I started volunteering for the local Rape Crisis Center in my county, organizing protests, and taking women's studies classes. I got my BA and MA in Spanish and took a special interest in women's issues in the developing countries of Latin America. I moved to Seattle in 2000 and taught for a while at a university there; during my four years in that incredible city, I was heavily involved in (and for part of the time was the president of) the board of directors of Home Alive, a kick-ass, grassroots, anti-violence organization that you may have heard about if you read Inga Muscio's book Cunt. Home Alive will always be dear to me because it is deeply rooted in the arts and music (the organization was founded in the wake of the rape and murder of Mia Zapata, lead singer for the punk band The Gits), two things that are very important to me.
When I moved to Pennsylvania to start my Ph.D. in comparative literature (with a minor in women's studies) in 2004, I promptly signed up for the 170+ hours of training required to be a crisis counselor at the local Women's Resource Center, a safe haven that serves not only as a crisis hotline but also as a domestic violence shelter. I've been certified since this past summer and the work has been extremely gratifying. I've worked a long time with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault (as have several others on the VP Team), so maybe it makes a little more sense now why we take such a strong stand on things like victim blaming and empowerment. I can't imagine this kind of work ever not being a part of my life.
Other things besides women's health/rights that I am interested include:
That's about it! Feel free to comment if you're curious about anything else. Mainly I want to thank you all--especially the old-timers who have been around since the beginning and have tolerated several hundred yeast infection posts in their day (if any of you are reading this, leave a comment and say hi) and all the women who have helped with VP in various ways over the years. I appreciate you all, old and new, more than you know. Thanks for being a part of this amazing project with us.
Keep rocking the VP revolution, y'all!

Other things besides women's health/rights that I am interested include:
+ Languages! Other than English, I also speak Spanish and Portuguese. I've been working on Japanese too. I'm going to Brazil this summer and can't wait for the ensuing language immersion.
+ Pinball & video games! Right now I'm enjoying World of Warcraft, a male-dominated MMORPG. (It's been pretty fascinating to see how gender roles play out in that kind of scenario, let me tell you.) I'm super into all my Xbox and PS2 games too. Some recent favorites are Destroy All Humans, Katamari Damacy (and its sequel), and Stubbs the Zombie. I also love old school Atari games and vintage pinball machines. My favorite modern pinball machines are probably Attack from Mars, Theatre of Magic, and Medieval Madness.
+ (Comic) Books! Oh man, I love comic books--especially when they feature any combination of the following: zombies, ninjas, samurai and/or (giant) robots (from outer space). I love reading text-only stories too, so long as they aren't sappy love stories.
+ Music! Some of my favorite bands/artists right now are: Modest Mouse, Bit Shifter, Enemy Mine, John Zorn/Naked City, Yoko Kanno, Julieta Venegas, Nouvelle Vague, Gogol Bordello, Beekeeper, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Orishas.
+ Movies & Japanese Animation! Some of my favorite movies are: Donnie Darko, Brazil, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Dead Man, kung fu movies, and most things by Almodóvar and/or Monty Python. Some of my favorite anime series are: FLCL, Samurai Champloo, Lain, Paranoia Agent, Elfen Lied, Eureka 7, Noein, Bleach, Noiseman Sound Insect, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Beck, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Gilgamesh. I don't watch much TV, but I do have a few favorite shows, like Queer as Folk (RIP) and Dr. G, Medical Examiner.
+ Animal/Human Rights! I'm a vegan who loves to cook and share delicious animal-free food with my friends and family. Although women's rights are obviously very important to me, the rights of all animals--human or otherwise--are important, too. I try to do what I can not to contribute to the suffering of others.

Keep rocking the VP revolution, y'all!

I never thought VP would grow to such proportions, but I'm so very glad that it did. So you've been around since the beginning, eh? Thanks for sticking around. We appreciate your contributions!

I'm at the end of my undergrad and sort of regret never really taking any classes in women's studies and/or counseling. I think when I go back for grad school I'll have to incorporate one of those.
I'm really loving reading these bios. They're so interesting and refreshing!

And yes, that's my natural eye color--thanks, gosh!
What are you majoring in during your undergrad?

We once had a drag show and my name was drawn in a raffle for a free drag makeover. Needless to say, I make a very ugly man.

Fullmetal Alchemist is indeed awesome. Did you watch the whole series? The ending blew me away. Such a good show.

Serious love.
I had someone attack me once on how sexist and misogynistic that band is... I don't see that at all!

Did you know that the lead singer, Eugene Hutz, is starring in a very promising movie with Elijah Wood called Everything Is Illuminated (http://everythingisilluminated.com/)? (You can watch the trailer at that site if you haven't already seen it.)

Stupid comment:
(I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't ban me for mocking. Remember the immense love you have for me... You're my... NUMBER 2. On your jerk. Chest. I meant to say #1.)
Re: Stupid comment:
If we can find a way for the two of us penis-less people to make a baby together, I'm all for it. It would be tall. And cranky. And have blue eyes. And be awesome.
