Help! Please!

::Sigh::
Okay, I have tooo many questions and I've looked through everything, Hopefully I didn't miss anything that would have answered all my questions because my computer wont let me see most of what i should see on the internet, but here i go:

I went to the gyno today for the first time ever. I'm traumatized but it wasen't as bad as I thought it was going to be, the main reaon I went is because I wanted birth control.
My Doctor put me on Yasmin. I don't start taking the pills till this sunday since my period ended today. I got tested and I'm clean and my boyfriend is going this week to get tested (I refuse to have condomless sex with him untill he does get tested.)

so my questions are:

1. If I miss a day and I take it later on in the day or early morning the day after is it still safe to have sex without condoms?

2. Is it okay that I drink and smoke an occational small amount of marajiuana?
(I drink a lot buti dont smoke on a normal basis, maybe once a month and i could live without it it's not a problem and i quit smoking ciggerettes weeks ago)

3.Can I have sex during my period while I'm taking the placebos or am I not protected because it's not actual hormones?

4.My doctor said that the BC will be completely effective after one week of taking it, I'm still nervous about this, should I wait longer?

5. My doctor also said im going to feel really sick and nauseous, does anyone know how to cure this if it does happen?

6. And last but not least; Does anyone have another other words of wisdom? I'm freaking out and I'm really nervous and I haven't even started taking the pills yet!

Thanks Sooooo Much
♥ Samantha

1. I'm not sure how yasmin works. With my pill I'm covered, but if you miss taking it, say in the moring, try and take it at night or as soon as you remember.
2. Smoking cigarettes while being on birth control increases your chance of stroke. I'm not sure about pot, I don't think alcohol is a problem, but check with your pharmacist.
3. I've had period sex while on the Pill (though it was necon and not yasmin). And I didn't have any problems.
4. I'm not sure how accurate that is. I would check with your pharmacist as well.
5. You can either take it before you go to bed, or take it with food. Just make sure it's not something that might make you feel queasy (really greasy or spicy food for example). I get nauseous but only during the first week of a new pack if I'm not careful.
6. It's just a pill, no need to worry. Just make sure you have a regular time where you can take it and not worry about missing it, like before you go to bed. This way you can get into a regular schedule of taking it. The biggest problem with ineffective birth control is women not sticking to a schedule (especially missing the first/last dose). But trust me, it's not that intimidating. ^_^

1. The pill insert should answer that one

2. I'm not sure, but I think you'll be O.K.

3. Yup, you're still protected

4. Seven active pills is all you need and you'll be protected from then on as long as you take your pills correctly

5. Try taking the pills before bed, that way you'll be asleep when you feel queasy

6. Don't take your pill too close to the sink or any other place it might fall in. Your period can come on ::any:: of the placebo days, so don't freak out if you've taken 4 or 5 placebos and you still haven't started. Read you pill insert so you know what all the normal side effects are.

1. If I miss a day and I take it later on in the day or early morning the day after is it still safe to have sex without condoms?
For most pills, a pill isn't considered "late" for 12 hours. So if you are just a few hours late it's not a missed pill. Also, check your pack insert & see what it says about missing a pill. Most pills do not require a back up after missing 1 pill, but always check your pack to make sure.

3.Can I have sex during my period while I'm taking the placebos or am I not protected because it's not actual hormones?
Yes, you are protected during your placebo week.

4.My doctor said that the BC will be completely effective after one week of taking it, I'm still nervous about this, should I wait longer?
Again, check out your pack. However, most pills are considered effective after 7 days of use. I do believe your pill is one of those.

5. My doctor also said im going to feel really sick and nauseous, does anyone know how to cure this if it does happen?
Not always true. So women feel sick to their stomachs at first on the pill, other don't. Personally I've never had a side effect from my pills. Even if you do it usually goes away after your first pack or two after your body adjust. To lower the chance of feeling sick, you may want to take your pill at night, like before bed. I've always taken my at 10pm. You can pick anytime of day to take your pill.

6. And last but not least; Does anyone have another other words of wisdom? I'm freaking out and I'm really nervous and I haven't even started taking the pills yet!
Dont freak out! THats my best advice. The more you freak, the more you stress yourself out. Be sure to take your pill everyday around the same time, pick a time that's easy for you. Also, don't freak out when your placebo week hits & you don't get your period right away. You can get your period anytime during the week, I don't get mine until day 5 or 6 of placebo week usually. Read your insert so you know about your pill & ask us or your doctor questions if you need to.

Good luck with your pill!

Definitely go check out the memories at [livejournal.com profile] birthcontrol. They should have most if not all the answers you need,

I was going to suggest that, but the memories are still on the fritz, which is such a pain :(

I'm a year-long Yasmin user! First of all, it's worked great for me. The only side effects I had are weight loss, shorter/less painful periods and acne clearing-up. To answer your questions (and I'm doing this with the Yasmin insert in front of me, just to make sure I get it all right):

1. If you miss ONE pill, take it as soon as you remember - even if it's when you take your next pill (meaning you'll take two at once). That's fine to do and, yes, you can still have sex without a condom and be protected, but if you do have to take two pills at once, you may feel a little sick to your stomach. That's normal, and nothing to worry about.

If you miss TWO pills in a row, don't take two of them (never take more than two at a time) even if it's at the time you're supposed to take the third pill. If you miss TWO in a row, there is a possibility of pregnancy within the next seven days, so use a backup method of birth control during that time.

If you miss TWO pills during the THIRD WEEK of your pack, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new one immediately. If you're a Sunday starter, keep taking the pills until the next Sunday, and then start a new pack. You may not have your period this month because of starting a new pack, and there is a possibility of pregnancy within the next seven days, so use a backup method of birth control during that time.

If you miss THREE or more pills (during the first three weeks, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new one immediately. If you're a Sunday starter, keep taking the pills until the next Sunday, and then start a new pack. You may not have your period this month because of starting a new pack, and there is a possibility of pregnancy within the next seven days, so use a backup method of birth control during that time.

And, as a general rule, if you're not sure if it's OK to sex without a condom, use one anyway! Better to be safe than accidentally pregnant!

2. The insert that comes with Yasmin only addressing cigarette smoking but I'm sure some of the warning apply to marijunana too. It's a bad idea to smoke when you're on Yasmin because it, "increases the risk of serious adverse side effects on the heart and blood vessels"

3. Yes, you are protected.

4. After 7 days (assuming you take it correctly) the pill is active and working; but there's nothing wrong with using a back-up method of birth control for awhile after that, especially if you're nervous about it!

5. My doctor told me to take my first month or two of pills before I went to bed, so if I did have any nausea from the pill I'd sleep right through it.

6. Make sure you read through the insert that comes with the package of pills ... if you have any questions, talk to your doctor! That's what (s)he's there for! And, of course, we'll all be here to answer any questiosn you have.

Finally, congratulations! =)

1. You should check the insert that comes with your pills. Every pill has it's own time frame... I generally use a backup if I miss it by more than 6 hours.

2. I drink and smoke comparable amounts to you, and it's just fine. The precautions with smoking cigarettes are important, though, for blood pressure/blood clotting reasons, so if you start smoking cigs again, you should go back to the doctor and make sure it's sitll okay to be on the pill.

3. You're safe. I do it every month (couldn't live w/o it...)

4. I waited a whole month at the request of my boyfriend. The one week should be fine, but it makes me nervous (personally)... by the end of 2 weeks you should be fine.

5. I don't think there's a cure besides waiting it out... I didn't get any side effects whatsoever, except that they made me cry a lot.

6. It's good that you're asking so many questions because it means you'll probably be really reliable about taking your pills on time!

When I got EC at PP they told me there could be an increased "risk" of nausia, and said that Dramamine could be taken to curb the nausia. I'd just see how it went, or just take it at night like the others suggested. It might be easier too in helping to remember taking it, as long as you make taking the pill part of your nightly routine; just dont pop the pill out over the sink, I've read too many "oh noes, my pill fell down the sink!" posts. =)

[identity profile] mandaryn.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
well.. whatever works for you.
You might not get nausia.... I've been on nuva ring for almost 2 months now, the only bout of nausia i got was one day at work when I hadn't eaten/drank all day ... not smart.
Even when i did the EC a few years back, I was fine. You might wind up being ok.
Ask your pharmacist about the dramamine though....

[identity profile] existentialpony.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Random... but I have a question. When you first went on the nuvaring, were there any physical side effects? ie weight gain/loss, breast increase/decrease?

[identity profile] mandaryn.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't noticed any yet. I've always heard things can be all weird the first 3 months. If there have been any, it's only been slight. I think i may have lost weight recently, but I've also been going to the gym and my eating habits have been out of wack due to a new work schedule, so it's hard to say.

[identity profile] oilbird.livejournal.com 2005-06-30 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
i know plenty of people on yasmin who were never naseous at all. it really depends on the person.
and i am THE WORST at remembering to take my pill, so i set my watch alarm (because im a HUGE dork) to beep at the time i like to take it... that works for me (if you even wear a watch regularly). remember its most effective when you take it at the same time every day (you know, within like three hours).
and congrats...being on birth control is wonderful. seriously,

Using my Yasmin instruction booklet (damn, this thing is thick):
1. If I miss a day and I take it later on in the day or early morning the day after is it still safe to have sex without condoms?
Only if you take it within 12 hours. If you don't, you aren't protected. You are allowed to take two pills in a day if that's how it works out, but if it's more than 12 hours late then you need to use a barrier method for the next seven days.

2. Is it okay that I drink and smoke an occational small amount of marajiuana?
(I drink a lot buti dont smoke on a normal basis, maybe once a month and i could live without it it's not a problem and i quit smoking ciggerettes weeks ago)
Doesn't mention this at all, so ask your doctor.

3.Can I have sex during my period while I'm taking the placebos or am I not protected because it's not actual hormones?
Yes, as long as you've been taking the pills regularly otherwise. If not, it's that seven day thing again.

4.My doctor said that the BC will be completely effective after one week of taking it, I'm still nervous about this, should I wait longer?
Actually, the booklet says it's effective immediately, as long as you do start taking the pills exactly as the booklet directs (on day one of your next period).

5. My doctor also said im going to feel really sick and nauseous, does anyone know how to cure this if it does happen?
I never got that (I haven't actually had a known side effect yet, apart from it helping with my spots) but ginger's usually good for nausea. I sed to have mint for travel sickness when I was little, too.

6. And last but not least; Does anyone have another other words of wisdom? I'm freaking out and I'm really nervous and I haven't even started taking the pills yet!:
I love my Yasmin, honest, and I've been on it for seven months tomorrow. I have no idea what it's actually like as BC, since I don't use it as that, but it's really good for regulating periods and so on. I managed to use it to skip one period with no side-effects whatsoever (my doctor had told me I could), but I don't think my body appreciated me skipping a second one, too. It tastes very slightly of carrots to me, and the pills are tiny.
