A little confused...a tad bit worried...

Ok, ladies, it's not too often that I need help, but today is obviously a different story...

*How common is it for men to get bladder infections?? UTI's??
*What's the difference between a bladder infection and a UTI??

Why do I ask?? Well, my BF woke up this morning and had some painful urination. Of course, he's lookin at me with a crazy eye, but I KNOW I don't have anything. I just had an "All-Clear" pap smear a few weeks ago, and I figure that my doc would have told me if somethin seemed strange. I looked up Chlamydia and Ghoneria (sp?) and they are associated with painful urnination but it also said that syptoms appear 7-21 days after exposure. I haven't cheated on him, especially in the past 7-21 days. Any ideas what's going on? Please let me know somethin because right now, he's practically convinced that I've given him somethin. Oh, and are there any places that can do CHEAP same-day testing (I already called Planned P-hood, can't get me in until May 2)?? I live in Houston, BTW...

It's uncommon but not impossible for a man to get a UTI. A UTI and a bladder infection are really the same thing...UTI stands for urinary tract infection, bladder infection obviously implies the bladder but people use the term when they just mean UTI quite frequently.

Your doctor didn't necessarily do an STD check on the pap, you have to ask for it. It's possible you've had chlamydia for a long time without symptoms (men are more likely to actually see symptoms than women) and have passed it to him if you've just recently stopped using condoms or something.

Also this only happened this morning? If he keeps having painful urination he should go to a doctor, if it's a one-time thing, don't worry about it.

I'm a little concerned that he's so suspicious of you, especially of you cheating. If something is wrong, it's important not to throw accusations around, and don't let him accuse you of doing something you didn't just because he's scared and doesn't understand what's going on.

AZO is just a urinary analgesic, it stops pain during urination without treating any of the underlying causes. So if he's had AZO lying around for a while, well, I'd doubt that this is the first time he's had burning during urination.

Males can absolutely get bladder infections and UTI.

To my knowledge, a bladder infection is actuallyt in the bladder, on its way to the kidneys. A UTI is still only in the urinary tract, ie urethra. Both have similar symptoms for me, and can be treated with simply antibiotics and that notorious anastehtic that makes your urin bright orange. :)

Your bf is over-reacting, UTIs and bladder infections are nto AS common with males (again, to my knowledge) but they aren't uncommon either. Just tell him to go to the doctor, then excpet some BIG flowers and candy with the apology for ever doubting you.

UTI refers to the entire urinary tract- urethra, bladder, ureters, & kidneys- not just the urethra. Bladder infection or kidney infections are both terms used for UTI's- they were used more in the past by doctors but not so much any more though you will still hear them occasionally. IF the infection has definantly in the kidneys it is usually called Pyelonephritis. Any UTI can move to the kidney and then potentially the blood stream & rest of the body so any time someone has sympotoms they need to be checked out & treated appropriatly. i think they are about 5 times more common in girls than boys. but i also think this stat is for kids, not adults.

It's not as common in males as in females, but it's entirely possible.

If there's no way you could have exposed yourself, and he refuses to accept that it might be a UTI or bladder infection, consider that it's possible he has exposed himself and it working hard on misdirection- if he puts you on the defensive enough, you may not have time to get angry at him. I hope that's not offensive, just something to think about. Definitely definitely get both of you tested ASAP and use condoms till then.

My boyfriend had a UTI that progressed to a kidney infection when he was 10 years old. He says it's the most painful thing he's ever been through, and he has no clue how he got it.

Tell your boyfriend to go to an urgent care place and take a UTI pee test. Then get his sorry ass to apologize to you for ever doubting your fidelity!

No, the doctor won't test you for STDs unless you ask for them. The pap smear is not an STD test.
You and your boyfriend should BOTH visit the doctor and get tested for STDs. (Naturally he should ask for a UTI test first as men can get them). Women often have no symptoms for many common STDs (like Chlamydia).
If you do come up positive, there's always a chance, don't panic, just get treated and try to move on together and stay safe!

If he's willing to write you off at a moments notice as a cheater because *his* penis is burning when he pees, there might be a problem. He needs to realize that even if you do have an STD there is no fault, just the need to be more careful. It's just as likely it could be him right?

I dont think it's that uncommon for men to get UTIs.
My fiance has had two in his life (which I've only had one, so. . .) It's horrible for men because they have to get this huge-ass q-tip shoved up their urethra!

He should just go to the DR, they'll give him a pee test, and probably some antibiotics. . .
