Bleeding a lot

Hi all,

I had sex with my boyfriend last night and when I woke up this morning, I was bleeding vaginally a lot. I only noticed it when I wiped, but it was a lot of bright red blood, almost dripping (like more than when I get my period). I've ben having sex for over a year and this is the first time it happened...should I go straight to the ER? I'm really scared.

Could this be an irregular month for you, and this be your period? In general, heavy bleeding is worth looking into if you're going through more than a pad or tampon per hour for an extended period of time. I'm not a health care practitioner, but I'll cautiously tell you that this is probably just something to keep an eye on, rather than be scared about.

It seems to have been a one time thing. It turns out there was blood on the condom so it seems like I starts bleeding during sex. I'm on the pill and it doesn't seem like a period...do you think that would be cause for more or less concern? Any idea if rough sex could cause that much bleeding?

I know you're not a doctor, just wanted to talk it over before I psych myself out.

Do you have a nurse's line that you can call instead of going to the hospital right away? It depends on your insurance, but usually you can call them and tell them what's wrong and they'll tell you to either try A, B and C before going to the doctor or tell you to get there right away.
