Let's try this again, Condoms??

For those of you who only use condoms for contraceptive purposes, what are your favorite kinds? What kinds have you found problems with? How many of you have had scares? Personal experiences are a must in this situation! I appreciate all responses! Thanks!

I've never had a condom break/scare, though I use them as a secondary form of BC, since I have an IUD.

We use Durex Fetherlites, which are the UK version of Durex Ultra Sensitive, or something like that, though they aren't exactly the same. Since for me, there is very little sensation difference from one condom to another (aside from the amount of lube on them) I usually leave condom choice up to my partner, and he prefers those.

We've tried Trojans and "One" brand condoms, and the One's were very very nice, especially the extra thin version, but my boyfriend needs the larger size, and the One's don't come in a thin+large version, so we stick with the Fetherlites, which are larger than the standard US condom.

Oh, and we've tried Durex Love's as well - and they are by far the best US condoms we've tried. I'm in the US and my partner is in the UK, so if we don't have any of the UK Durex ones, we choose the Love's over any other US condoms.

I've always used Trojans, just the plain type and am pretty satisfied. I have once tried the ribbed, and I will never again it was so painful. Possibly because I am TINY; I don't really know.

VCF at the moment, but preferrably Today sponges - every time.

I like the boysenberry ones because they make my boyfriends junk smell like pie.

We use Ansell Lifestyles.
No scares/breaks.

+1 for Durex Ultra thins ) Never had any problem. Durex Love come with naughty fake tattoo which always ends up on my butt =)
For some reason its only with them I can feel...um, extreme warmth of a penis? lol

We use Trojans, but I'm not fond of the smell. Of the three years we've been having sex, only one Trojan ever broke on us - it was an Ultra-Thin, so I've very iffy on that kind now. The ones we favored are the Warm Sensations, but I think those kinds have been discontinued for some reason. Other than that, we randomize which ones we pick. (Ribbed, Her Sensations, Twisted Pleasure; you name it, we've tried it.)

I picked up a box of Durex condoms the other day and I'm pleasantly surprised at the milder smell these ones give off. Since we don't have much experience with Durex, I can't recommend them, but I'm thinking about alternating between the two brands now.

[identity profile] voyevoda.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm permanently on Durex after realising only Trojan gave off that disgusting smell. It's a good one. :)

[identity profile] mrar.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I use lifestyles nonlubricated. My urethra is ultra-sensitive and I only use glycerin free lube, because glycerin will dry on my urethra and then I'll wake up with all the symptoms of a UTI without an actual UTI, even if I pee after sex, so nonlubricated condoms are a must. I still sometimes get an irritated urethra but it happens a lot less. Before it was happening every. single. time.

My scares have always been from a late period, never from a condom break.

[identity profile] mrar.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
PS: Before I realized I need nonlubricated, I tried studded and her sensation and have determined that they are the worst things ever. All those ribs and studs and twists and things don't give me pleasure, just pain.

[identity profile] sandi1743.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yes! personally i found the "for her pleasure" condoms made me raw and just ripped me up - for the life of me could not figure out who the heck find that "pleasurable" and when talking to other friends they agreed as well...

[identity profile] randomtrend.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I love Trojan Ultra-Ribbed. It almost makes my boyfriend feel thicker. They CAN hurt so you have to make sure you're producing enough "lube" of your own or use store bought stuff! :)
Never any breakage scares either.

[identity profile] lovethatlovage.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always used Durex. They don't smell as gross, they don't dry me out as much, and they seem to be a bit cheaper. No breaks ever.

[identity profile] lovethatlovage.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
http://www.condomusa.com/8a27-condom.asp

I love these. Almost no smell to them either.

[identity profile] arularia.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like Trojan ribbed condoms. They actually make a ribbed and an ultra ribbed (or something like that) which are both fun, but the ultra-ribbed is a bit rougher. I personally like the feeling though and they're the only ribbed version that our local store carry in the big 36-count box variety. The twisted pleasure ones are pretty fun too. My guy tells me that these feel a little thinner at the tip than the ribbed ones. We've also tried ultra-thins and, according to him, they almost feel like he's not actually wearing a condom. We don't use those very often though because he likes to use the condom to help him last longer.

I really hate the mutual pleasure/warming sensation/whatever they're called ones. They do nothing for me and one of my past partners complained that the heat was actually uncomfortable to him. And they kind of press down on the ridge below the head of the penis which just smooths everything out and kills a lot of the feeling for me.

I've used condoms with a spermicidal lube exactly once and never again. They burned and hurt like hell. Apparently my lady bits don't jive on nonoxynol-9.

We've also tried Durex brand condoms. I think it was just the regular, lubricated kind. That's what they handed out at the county clinic I used to go to. For some reason, they only gave out colored ones which was always slightly hilarious as my fiance and I would actually dig through the bag to find a certain color on some occasions. The green ones creeped me out a bit, though.

Only scare we ever had with a condom was when I somehow managed to catch the edge of it and pulled it off of him when he was pulling out. I took Plan B the next day and everything was fine. Since then, we pay extra attention to making sure that the condom is rolled all the way down and he grabs the base when he pulls out (which is how we should have been doing it anyway). I've never had a condom break.

Before I was on HBC, my boyfriend and I used Trojans (not sure what type, I just remember the packaging being red). Now we only use condoms (ones that I actually got from my doctor's office when he gave me the BC prescription)if we are like "Oh hey, let's have sex."

Otherwise it's just HBC as primary source.
Haven't had any problems with the Trojans or the doctor provided :)

Will only ever use non-latex ones. Lifestyles Avanti is a good alternative to latex. There is debate about whether or not they are as effective due to their new-ness - the box itself suggests that unless you NEED it you might be better off with latex ones since they stretch better...

But I'd much rather use something plasticky than something latexy in my vag.

[identity profile] sandi1743.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
when i first developed my lated allergy we tried to use these - they transfer heat much better than latex and are a bit larger than the Trojan non-latex condoms. the female condoms are made of the same material and are (obviously) much larger but considering that he did not like the female condoms and the durex ones were too small, we decided to do with out - but i wanted to second the goodness of non-latex condoms!
As far as them protecting from STI/STD's honestly - we use the same material for gloves in our lab and handle human biological materials all day without worry, so i really don;t think that there is much to worry about in that respect.

[identity profile] dearstudioaud.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
i like the durex ultra thins, or sensitive ones, they are purple thats all i remember.
i dont like trojan ones, they made my vagina burn a bit and i had them break twice, so no.
i had a scare, with a condom i ironically got from PP at school. it was purple, ones of the ONE condoms i believe. anyway, it sucked.

[identity profile] hayden.livejournal.com 2008-11-28 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't use condoms anymore (five months pregnant, to me there isn't really a point anymore), but when i was using them, i liked trojan her pleasure the best. durex broke on us quite a few times, actually.

what you should do is go to walmart or a drug store and buy a variety pack, that way you get to test out more than one and see what you like the best. :)

[identity profile] yourmarian.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
i became pregnant when a condom broke years and years ago right around the time my egg dropped. he was big so we should have been using the larger ones.

[identity profile] erinleighralph.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I really like Lifestyles Ultrathins. Durex feel really thick and I totally get some sort of rash/infection from Trojans Every. Single. Time. I use them.

[identity profile] hikaruuchiha.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Big fan of Durex, especially the Pleasuremax ones. I've never had a scare, though I occasionally have to go off them when they irritate my genitals.

[identity profile] oopsiedaisies7.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
My boyfriend and I used only condoms for about a year, and we tried basically every kind of Trojans. We liked the regular lubed ones (they came in a blue box), because the ultra-thins were slightly smaller and uncomfortable on his penis. I REALLY liked the "her pleasure" ones (in a purple box!), but other than that none of the fancy ribbed/studded/oddly shaped/scented/warming condoms felt any different than the normal ones.

We never had any breaks/scares, and we used about 4 36-ct. boxes (plus a 3-ct and a couple of 12-ct boxes! hah). We were pretty careful about putting them on, changing them if they got a little dry, using lube with them, etc.

[identity profile] sutaseiu.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm usually boring and just use the lubricated Durex ones. I trust pretty much any of their condoms though. Trojan I've used, but they've broken one too many times for me to feel comfortable using them alone (I hate the morning after pill enough to consider risking pregnancy and an abortion instead).

[identity profile] svexsal.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I live for durex and lifestyles. Trojans have almost always caused some vag irritation a few hours after sex no matter how much I pee or wash afterwards.
I've only had a scare with Trojan Supra Polyurethane as it broke on me. No other scares since then!
Check out condomania.com!

Naturalamb brand lambskin condoms!

One scare -- we were doing "typical use" of not withdrawing immediately after ejaculation (which we have done in the past and will likely do in the future), and it slipped off before it was entirely outside of me, spilling the contents along the outside of my vulva.

In case any of them were superninjasperm, we did the "plan b" of the era, which was to use foam spermicide immediately in order to wage chemical warfare against the ninja. No pregnancy resulted.

We had a few other scares, but only of the "okay, I remember no accidents, but where the heck is my period?" kind. (My period was playing silly buggers because of undiagnosed hypothyroidism, I'm rather sure.)

Latex condoms have been used a bit, but they feel "draggy" to me, and too-tight to ze spouse. He prefers the lambskins.

We have never had a breakage with a lambskin.

Note that lambskins, however, are not believed to protect against STI transmission, but only against pregnancy.

Female Condom - no problems.

[identity profile] cheesybunny.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
We used (definitely not perfectly, but along with withdrawl) beyond sevens and durex ultra sensitives. They are both good condoms as far as feeling goes. No breakages, and I am only ever late when I get super stressed about school.

I'm on the nuvaring now though so we only use condoms on toys and when we want easy cleanup.

Oh and my boyfriend hates trojans (I've never really tried them) and I don't like ribbed or studded, feels like sandpaper to me.

my bf and i use condoms only about 95% of the time. we use plain Trojans with spermicidal lube. The only scares we have had is when the condom slipped a couple times...and i took plan B.( we have been sexually active for a year) The other 5% of the time i will squirt some spermicidal jelly in me to use along with condoms.

[identity profile] hiriel1804.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I just use the free ones I get at my university, of the marvellous brand "generic condoms by the Health Department of Norway". They work fine, but they seem to randomly change sizes in the condoms they have availiable... It was a bit like "Uhm, honey, did your penis grow overnight..?"

[identity profile] slave-stasha.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Up until about a month ago I have always used only condoms as my bc method...but a couple of recent scares...Not from the condom failing or anything but because my brain freaked out...have pushed me to go on HBC.

We like lifestlyes the best...but simply because they are cheaper no other reason really lol

[identity profile] swirlinoblivion.livejournal.com 2008-11-29 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty loyal to the Trojans with spermicidal lubricant. They're really strong- we filled one in the bathtub until it was as big as a 30-lb dog once, just to see how strong it was. The only time I've ever had one break was when I was drunk and couldn't make enough lube myself and didn't have any handy- there was just too much friction. So don't forget the lube!

[identity profile] glass-houses.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Trojan Ultrathins with lubricant are all I've used and they're great. We might need to upgrade to a larger size though.

[identity profile] laisah.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I use only condoms as birth control and have been for the last 11 years. I have never had a condom break or slip off but I probably just got lucky w. that. I've tried a variety over the years and have come to love Kimono brand condoms. If I can't make it to the health store I will use LifeStyles (which are a lot cheaper). The new ones (elexa??) are really pretty good too. They are marketed as low odor latex, which is awesome!!
