Cups and IUD's

A question of curiosity;

I use menstrual cups. If I were to get an IUD, would I have to stop using them? Someone said this to me today.

I had a mirena and used my diva cup successfully. I had a lot of spotting from my mirena and the cup worked perfectly to solve that problem!
Some people definitely have problems with it though. There is a chance that you can catch the strings and pull the IUD out, or just pull it down farther than it should be.
I'd check out the iud_divas community here, they have a lot of info.
Good luck. I loved BOTH.

Basically, its sort of a "use at your own risk" situation. Its probably not the super greatest idea - the risk is that you'll catch the IUD strings when you pull your cup out, and give the IUD a yank before you know whats going on. I use my cup with an IUD though, because I just hate all the alternatives! Many women do so and are fine...but it is a risk, so really its all about your personal comfort level!

Ditto to the other posters. I've only had my iud for a couple weeks, but have used my cup successfully. The first couple insertions were very difficult, but I don't know if some of it was mental, just knowing there was "something else up there." good luck!

I've been told many times that the instead softcups were not recommended for paragard users because of the suction it creates.

insteads don't create suction, but they do scrape against the cervix when you remove them, could potentially pull the strings out at the same time as your cup, definitely.

that said i haven't had the 'ovaries' to use a cup with my IUD yet.

They're not recommended for use with any IUD, not just ParaGard, because the strings can get caught on the rim and get yanked.

i was really worried about this too because i loved my cup prior to getting my iud.

but then i got my iud, and i havent had a single period since, so its not really an issue for me!
