Some of it also depends on which of the hooks you normally wear your bra band at. If you wear it at the largest one, you're more likely to be comfortable going up a band size. If you wear it at the smallest, you might be able to go down a size.
I'm very much a 36DD. I can wear a 38D but the band slips some - but I often find I have to wear a 38D because 36DD is a hard size to find, at least in my area. Even at the store where I work 36DDs have to be special ordered.
