I understand that is what ovulation is, but the OP, to me at least, seemed to be confused about if it was normal to get pain midway through a period or what exactly they were referring to about the egg being released and such. I was simply trying to clarify that pain from ovulation could occur.
To the OP, I'm sorry if I interpreted your questions wrong or thought you didn't understand something you did. I was simply trying to let you know that ovulation pain can be a normal thing. It is possible that you could have a cyst or something causing the pain, as janaphone said, but it could also just be normal pain from ovulation. Your doctor will probably check for anything abnormal before they deem it to just be regular ovulation pain. Birth control will help with this pain, though, because you will not ovulate on birth control.
